Baseball Sweeps Salem State In Season-Opening Doubleheader, 3-1 & 14-0

BEVERLY, Mass. – The Endicott baseball team swept Salem State, 3-1 and 14-0, on Saturday evening at North Field.

GAME ONE: Endicott 3, Salem State 1

WP (1-0): Rian Schwede (Whitman, Mass.) – 8 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 10 K
LP (0-1): Brock Pare (Lowell, Mass.) – 4 1/3 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 5 K
SV (1): Max Tarlin (Sharon, Mass.) – 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K

Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the fourth inning, Nickolas Perkins (Nashua, N.H.) mashed a go-ahead two-run homer to dead center field to put the Gulls in front for good.

Perkins also added an insurance run in the eighth when he drove home Jake Nardone (Wakefield, Mass.) from second with a single to center field.

Nardone set up both scoring innings via a leadoff walk in the fourth and a table-setting double in the eighth.

GAME TWO: Endicott 14, Salem State 0

WP (1-0): Jordan Gottesman (Acton, Mass.) – 5 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 9 K
LP (0-1): Jack Sefrino (Dartmouth, Mass.) – 3 IP, 8 H, 8 R, 6 ER, 2 BB, 2 K

Endicott scored five runs in the first inning and never looked back.

Thomas Barbieri (Cranston, R.I.) was the Gulls' offensive catalyst in the blowout victory as the junior catcher went 4-for-5 with four runs driven in.

In total, eight student-athletes notched RBI highlighted by Nicolas Notarangelo (Taunton, Mass.) who had an inside the park home run to left-center field in the second to make it 6-0, at the time.

The Gulls scored at least one run in every inning but the fourth and sixth frames, respectively.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORES

  • Endicott nearly evened the all-time series with the sweep (16-17-2).
  • The Gulls have beaten Salem State in their last three consecutive meetings.
  • First season-opening victory since 2018 (W, 3-2 vs. Stevens, 3/4/18).

WHAT'S NEXT

Endicott (2-0) hosts Bates on Wednesday, March 9 at 3:30 PM. Salem State (0-2) travels to Keene State on Tuesday, March 8 at 2:30 PM.
