Kissimmee, FL-- The Gulls second game of the day was a thriller. EC played a tough Illinois Wesleyan team, but came away with the 5-4 victory.
The ladies started things off quickly with a 3 run first. Paula McGinn led off the game by reaching first on an error by the 1st baseman. Ashley Labella followed with a walk and with runners on 1st and 2nd, Megan Young singled, loading the bases. Illinois Wesleyan then allowed a passed ball bringing McGinn home and advancing Labella and Young. Megan Huckins then grounded into a fielder's choice scoring Labella tallying the Gulls second run. Young then scored on another Illinois Wesleyan passed ball. The third inning started with a Labella walk. Young then sacrificed Labella to second. Elyse Colby followed with an RBI single for the Gulls fourth run.
The top of the fourth spelt trouble for the Gulls as Illinois Wesleyan put up 4 runs of their own tying the game. The Gulls battled back in the 5th, as Colby tripled and scored when the relay throw from the outfield was off the mark for the game winning run.
Nicole Reather pitched 4 2/3 innings allowing only 1 earned run. Robyn Savitske came in for relief pitching a scoreless 2 1/3 for the save. Defensively, Katie Doherty, McGinn, Labella and Huckins all made big plays.
The Gulls improved to 2-0 and will face Calvin College and Franklin Marshall tomorrow.
