Suffolk Tops Women's Basketball In CCC First Round, 84-64

BOSTON, Mass. – The Endicott women's basketball team fell to Suffolk, 84-64, on Tuesday night in the first round of the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Tournament at Smith Court.

After a back-and-forth opening nine minutes with the two teams deadlocked at 19-19, Suffolk ignited an 8-0 run to end the first quarter with a 27-19 advantage.

Endicott never wavered as Emma Shinney (Wakefield, Mass.) scored the next four points, while a Libby Fleming (Bangor, Maine.) layup cut the lead down to two.

The next 2:30 of play saw Suffolk push its lead back up to six, but Sarah Dempsey (Windham, N.H.) went on a personal 5-0 run (layup, jump shot, and free throw) to pull the game within one, 33-32, at the break.

The third quarter proved the be the difference as the Rams outscored the Gulls 29-17 to go up 13 heading to the fourth and did not relinquish the double-digit lead the rest of the way.

Dempsey led Endicott with 28 points, her seventh consecutive game in a row with 20 or more points and 11th time this season.

Fleming also contributed a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds.

Cora Nadeau (Newport, Vt.) added 13 points, while Shinney notched nine points and eight dimes.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • Tonight's contest was the first meeting between the two teams in the postseason.
  • The all-time series lead is not knotted at 17-17.
  • The visitors only had 11 turnovers compared to the hosts' 15.
  • Fleming registered her eighth double-double of the season.   

WHAT'S NEXT

Endicott sees its season come to a close at a 14-12 record. Suffolk (20-6) advances to the semifinals of the CCC Tournament as they will travel to take on number one seed, Western New England.
