Gulls Weather the Storm, Defeat Nor'Easters 3-1

BIDDEFORD, Maine - The Endicott women's volleyball team traveled north to take on the University of New England in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) play on Tuesday night and returned home with a 3-1 win to improve to 14-4 overall and 5-0 in CCC play. The Gulls dropped the opening set 25-22, before taking the next three by scores of 25-20, 26-24 and 25-22.

Leading the way for the Gulls were graduate students Amanda Gilbert (West Falmouth, Mass.) and Colleen McAvoy (Coventry, Conn.), as the duo teamed up for 25 of the team's 52 kills. Gilbert's match-high 16 kills came on 43 swings with just for errors for a .273 average, while she added a season and career-high 20 digs on the defensive end. McAvoy posted nine kills on 14 error-free swings, while also finishing tied for the match-high with six blocks, as she added a team-best three aces in the win.

Kelsey Sanborn (Londonderry, N.H.) finished the match with nine kills and five digs, while Sophie Breitenbach (Newport, R.I.) and Krystina Schueler (Trumbull, Conn.) each recorded eight kills in the win. 

Setters Ella Koelb (Auburn, N.H.) and Lauren McGrath (Franklin, Mass.) ended the night with 25 and 20 assists, respectively, as the Gulls finished the match out-hitting the Nor'Easters .239 to .156. Endicott also held a slight edge in kills (52-49) and points (98-91).

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • Endicott improves to 29-3 all-time against UNE with the win. The Gulls have won 29 of the last 30 matchups between the two programs, with the lone loss coming in 2012. Over the 12 matches since that point, Endicott has gone 12-0 overall, holding a 36-5 advantage in set wins over that stretch. 
  • Gilbert's double-double of 16 kills and 20 digs gives her nine on the season, as she is now averaging 3.52 kills/set and 3.08 digs/set while hitting for a .273 clip.
  • Alexandra Tecun (Hawthorne, Calif.) stepped up big for the Gulls defensively, posting a season-high 18 digs in the win.

WHAT'S NEXT

Endicott (14-4, 5-0 CCC) returns home to the Nest to host AVCA nationally-ranked No. 12 Wesleyan on Friday night at 7:00 PM, while the University of New England (5-12, 2-3 CCC) plays host to Maine Presque-Isle on Saturday at 6:00 PM.
