Smith Edges Women’s Tennis, 5-4

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. — The Endicott women's tennis team lost to Smith College, 5-4, in non-conference action on Thursday evening.

In doubles, the No. 2 pairing of Olivia Martinelli (Coral Springs, Fla.) / Ashley Keaveney (Exeter, N.H.) earned a hard-fought 8-7 (7-4) victory to secure the Gulls' lone point.

Endicott also saw Lejla Guster (Wethersfield, Conn.), Shelby Henry (Lincoln, Neb.), and Keaveney win at No. 1 (6-4, 7-5), No. 4 (6-4, 3-6, 10-8), and No. 5 (7-5, 6-3) singles, respectively.

"Credit to Smith, they are well coached and played really well from top to bottom," said Endicott women's tennis head coach Anthony D'Angelo. "Our doubles wasn't as sharp today, but we really battled mentally. We'll use this and keep building for the end of April.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • Martinelli/Keaveney are 7-3 in doubles this season.
  • Guster earned her fifth singles win (1-1 at No. 1).
  • Henry is 8-7 in singles (2-0 at No. 4).
  • Keaveney is 6-5 in singles play (1-0 at No. 5).
