Gulls Eliminated From NCAA Tournament By Colby College

WATERVILLE, Maine --- The Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Champions, Endicott’s women’s lacrosse team was eliminated from the 2012 NCAA Division III tournament Wednesday night after a 21-5 defeat to the eighth-ranked mules of Colby College.

Endicott, which was making its seventh consecutive NCAA appearance, ends its season with a 12-6 record and is still looking for its first NCAA women’s lacrosse win in school history.

Colby, playing in its sixth NCAA tourney, is now 5-0 in opening round games and has outscored the opposition by a 94-22 margin.

Kelly Tierney (South Hadley, Mass.) and Michelle Loizzo (Longmeadow, Mass.( each scored twice for the Gulls and senior goalkeeper Leah Neff (South Berwick, Maine) made nine saves, but the Mules did a good job of stifling an Endicott offense that averages 14 goals a game.

The game was tight for the first 15 minutes, with both teams looking sharp offensively. Tierney tied the game at 1-1 after Claire Donegan (Great Falls, Va.) had scored the first goal of the game just 28 seconds into the contest. 

Donegan was one of three Mules to score three goals, along with All-American Kate Pistel (Amherst, Mass.) and Katie Griffin (Duxbury, Mass.). Pistel also had two assists, three draw controls, two ground balls, and one caused turnover, while Alex Mintz (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) had a collegiate-high four goals to pace the Mules, who led 13-4 at halftime.

Donegan scored off a free-position shot with 25:39 to play and Pistel tallied 1:18 later to put the Mules up 3-1. The Gulls cut the lead to 3-2 on an unassisted goal by Loizzo with 23:00 left. Colby went on a 3-0 scoring run on tallies by Griffin, Tess Petesch (Rockville, Md.), and Lindsey McKenna (Fairfield, Conn.). However, Endicott's Holly Davis (Guilford, Conn.) scored with 16:46 remaining in the first half to cut the lead to 6-3.
 
Colby put the game away with seven unanswered goals in a 12:01 span of time. Mintz started the run with 14:15 to play and ended it with 1:14 left for a 13-3 margin. The Gulls did cut it to 13-4 on Tierny's second goal of the game with 52 seconds left to intermission.
 
Donegan and Pistel scored goals in the first 4:15 of play to make the score 15-4 and put the 10-goal rule into play. The clock continued to run for the rest of the contest. Loizzo tallied on a free-position shot for Endicott to make it 15-5 with 21:03 left, but Colby scored the final six goals of the game.
 
Michelle Burt (Woodbridge, Conn.) stopped eight shots in net for Colby, while Neff had a number of fine stops among her nine saves.

Davis led Endicott with a pair of draw controls and Rachel Campos (Shrewsbury, Mass.) had three ground balls, one assist, and one draw control.

McKenna had four draw controls and four ground balls for the Mules, who had a 20-8 margin in draw controls in the game. Donegan and Griffin each had three draw controls. 


The Mules move to 14-2 overall and will play 10th-ranked Messiah College in a second round game Saturday at Trinity College.
