GORHAM, Maine -- The visiting Endicott College Gulls scored 11 unanswered goals in the opening 24 minutes and never looked back en route to a 19-5 victory over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a non-conference women's lacrosse match Saturday afternoon at Hannaford Field.
The Gulls, winners in three of their last four games, improved to 4-2 overall. The Huskies had their two-game winning streak stopped and fell back to .500 at 4-4 overall.
Senior Morgan DeShaw (Danville, N.H.) led Endicott's attack with a game-high seven goals and one assist. DeShaw scored four of the Gulls first six goals. Junior Kelly Tierney (South Hadley, Mass.) had seven points on one goal and six assists. Junior Holly Davis (Guilford, Conn.) contributed four goals and two assists, and classmate Lauren Todd (Newfields, N.H.) chipped in with three goals. Davis also had a game-high six draw controls.
Sophomore Rosie Forster (Andover, Mass.) led Southern Maine with three goals. Junior Shelby Turcotte (Lewiston, Maine) had a goal and an assist, and sophomore Jacki Kelly (Brunswick, Maine) dished off two assists.
Senior Leah Neff (South Berwick, Maine/Marshwood) started in goal for Endicott and recorded seven saves over 42:28 before giving way to sophomore Rachel Socolow (Westford, Mass.) who stopped one shot over the final 17:32. USM sophomore Kim Vogel (Sanford, Maine) was under constant pressure throughout the game and finished with 14 saves. The Gulls out shot the Huskies in the game 41-13.
The Gulls were in command of the game from the outset as DeShaw scored twice in the opening seven minutes. With DeShaw and Tierney leading the way, the Gulls continued to pour the shots on Vogel. Davis, Todd and DeShaw would each add two goals apiece, and three other players found the net once to give the Gulls an 11-0 lead before Forster put the Huskies on the board with 5:11 to play in the half. The Gulls had a comfortable 12-2 edge at the break.
In the second half, the Gulls controlled play while working the clock down. The Gulls added five goals on to their lead (17-2). The Huskies would out score the Gulls 3-2 over the final seven and a half minutes to account for the final tally.
Endicott will next play a Commonwealth Coast Conference game on Wednesday (4:00 p.m.) at Curry College.
Southern Maine is off until next Saturday (1:00 p.m.) when they travel to Keene, N.H., to open its Little East Conference schedule at Keene State College.
