Talk about Endicott women's lacrosse on Twitter: Tweet \#gogulls

BEVERLY, Mass. – Endicott’s women’s lacrosse team got their 2012 campaign off to a flying start on Wednesday night, withstanding an early storm and then shutting down Wellesley College to defeat the Blue 16-6 at Endicott Stadium.

Endicott took a four goal lead into halftime and then held the visitors to just one tally in the second half, scoring seven times themselves to reach a double-digit advantage. Holly Davis (Guilford, Conn.) scored four goals and tallied two assists to lead the Endicott offensive attack.

The Blue actually took leads in this game of 1-0 and 3-2. Wellesley got their noses in front when Brit Mscisz (Topsfield, Mass.) scored her fifth goal of the season less than a minute and a half into the game. Endicott answered with tallies from Morgan DeShaw (Danville, N.H.) and Callie Murphy (Woburn, Mass.), but two free position goals gave the Blue the advantage again with ten minutes played. The second, which put Wellesley in front, came from freshman Claire Canty (East Rockaway, N.Y.), who had already notched an assist on Mscisz’s goal.

Endicott roared back by scoring six of the next seven goals, three of them by Davis, who started the run with a free position goal at 19:00 and ended it nine minutes later with an unassisted tally that gave the Gulls an 8-4 lead. Along the way, Murphy and DeShaw each potted another goal, while Meagan Fuchs (Portland, Ore.) scored for the Blue.
Fuchs and Canty each had two goals on the evening for Wellesley, and Fuchs was the only member of the Blue to score in the second half.

That second half would see Endicott extend their advantage with five goals in the first ten minute of play. Davis and DeShaw each netted again and junior Kelly Tierny (South Hadley, Mass.) opened and closed the second half scoring. Sophomore Rachel Campos scored the lone free-position shot of the second half after picking off a pass by Wellesly goalkeeper Tori Hysko (Reisterstown, Md.) and drawing the foul on the goalie, giving her a free attempt on an empty net.

Campos also had two ground balls, two draw controls and assisted on Tierny’s final goal of the night. Davis and Tierny each had two assists of their own.

Endicott outshot their opponents 29-17, including a 14-5 advantage in the second half, but the Blue had the better of the draw controls, with an 11-4 first half advantage helping them to a 14-10 edge. The Blue were helped by junior Allison Robbins, who had five draw controls and senior Meredith Roy (Merrimack, N.H.), who snagged four of her own. Endicott got three draw controls from Davis, while senior Michelle Loizzo (Longmeadow, Mass.) led all field players with four ground balls. Fuchs had three ground balls for the Blue.

Senior goalie Leah Neff (South Berwick, Maine) made five saves in just under 50 minutes of action to earn her first win of the season.

Hysko stopped six shots but allowed 15 of Endicott’s goals before giving way to backup Tya Logan (Hillsboro, N.H.)

Endicott (1-0) will fly down south this weekend to play two games at the National Training Center Tournament in Orlando, Florida. The Gulls will face SUNY Geneseo on Sunday at 2:00 pm and then regional power Springfield at 4:00 pm next Tuesday.

The Gulls have now beaten Wellesley in their past four meetings. The Blue fall to 0-2 on the year and will stay on the road in a more local sense, travelling to Lasell for a 12:00 pm Saturday afternoon match.
