Putnam Sends Women's Basketball Past Gordon, 69-68

WENHAM, Mass. – The Endicott women's basketball team defeated Gordon College, 69-68, on Saturday afternoon at the Bennett Center.

With just 13 seconds left on the clock and trailing, 68-67, senior guard Kaleigh Putnam (Wallingford, Conn.) put home a layup to give the Gulls a 69-68 lead. The Fighting Scots then took the ball down the floor and had two attempts to retake the lead but were stifled both times by Olivia Duncan (Essex Junction, Vt.) to give Endicott a crucial Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) victory.

This sequence came during a fourth-quarter which saw the Gulls battle back from five-point deficits twice, and lead only three times, all by just one point.

The resiliency that the Gulls showed throughout the contest started in the first half. Endicott found themselves down 10 (18-8) after the first quarter, but a 24-12 run throughout the whole second quarter gave them a 32-30 lead heading into the halftime break and made for an exciting second half.

Putnam paced the Gulls with an impressive 18 point five assist game, while Emily Pratt (Gardner, Mass.) and Emily St. Thomas (Sterling, Mass.) each had 14 points.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • Nine of St. Thomas' 14 came during the critical 24-12 run in the second quarter.
  • Mikaela Rogers (Haverhill, Mass.) was a spark off the bench for Endicott with 10 points and nine rebounds.
  • The Gulls held the CCC's number one scorer Meghan Foley to just 10 points.
  • Duncan had eight points, five rebounds, and four assists in addition to her two huge blocks.
  • Endicott and Gordon split the season series.
  • The Gulls lead the all-time series over the Fighting Scots, 28-12.
