D3 WEEK: Winning Inside The Classroom

D3 WEEK: Winning Inside The Classroom

COSIDA ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICA PROGRAM | ACADEMIC ALL-CONFERENCE RECORD BOOK

BEVERLY, Mass. – Champions in and out of the classroom. That's the standard and expectation at Endicott College, plain and simple. Here's a look into what our student-athletes have achieved recently and some insight into the why and how our Gulls are successful where it matters most.

"Even though every single student-athlete at Endicott is different, all of our student-athletes are committed to doing their best in the classroom," said Endicott Athletics Faculty Athletics Representative Dr. Sergio Inestroza. "I will say there are three components in the way they approach their learning experience, which is not different from the practice of their sports. They execute, then we review their performance and give them feedback where they are open to follow those directions. From there, they're open to follow those suggestions and apply them, where they generally execute better after those sessions. These three things are a pattern in pretty much all our students-athletes on our campus."

ACADEMIC ACCOLADES

Statistically speaking, for the fall 2019 semester, varsity and club sports student-athletes combined to achieve a 3.30 semester grade point average (GPA). Meanwhile, Endicott also saw 186 student-athletes receive Academic All-Conference awards in 2019 and an additional 577 student-athletes garner Dean's List honors throughout the 2018-19 academic year.

The accolades don't stop there as Evan Couchot (Mason, Ohio/Biology & Biotechnology/Men's Soccer) and James Lewis (New Fairfield, Conn./Nursing/Football) claimed CoSIDA Academic All-America honors this year. Couchot and Lewis were also joined by Mackenzie Kennedy (Andover, Mass./Athletic Training/Women's Volleyball) and Grayson Maddux (Park City, Utah/Criminal Justice/Football) on the CoSIDA Academic All-District Team.

Overall, Endicott student-athletes have claimed 13 CoSIDA Academic All-America honors and 37 All-District accolades in its 25-plus-year-history as an athletic department. The CoSIDA Academic All-America® program is the longest-running and most prestigious academic and athlete award for student-athletes in college athletics.

Two student-athletes also received Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards during the abbreviated 2019-20 campaign. Those student-athletes were Elizabeth Masucci (Norwell, Mass./Elementary Education/Women's Soccer) and Couchot.

Lastly, Couchot's senior season was one for the record books as he became the only student-athlete in Endicott Athletics history to receive the CCC Senior Scholar-Athlete award, academic All-America honors, and athletic All-America accolades in the same year. He also is the first CCC men's soccer student-athlete to ever accomplish the feat and fourth overall in the conference's storied history.

THE WHY AND HOW

Our student-athletes, who make up 25-percent of Endicott's undergraduate student body, are able to routinely achieve high academic success because of the importance placed on the area by our athletic administration, coaches, and the College as a whole.

For starters, Endicott College was founded on the belief that successful students "learn by doing." All Endicott students complete three distinct internships over the course of their four years, gaining professional experience, building confidence, and making important industry contacts.

Those beliefs are also put into action and supported by Endicott's 1:13 student-to-faculty ratio and its average class size of 16.5 students, which helps foster a deeper and more caring/understanding learning experience.

Ultimately, Endicott College is about people.

Our students and faculty are well-rounded individuals who share a commitment to hard work and a passion for discovery. Our faculty are not only outstanding educators; they're also distinguished practitioners in their respective fields, and they consistently demonstrate genuine care and concern for our students' well-being and success.

That's the kind of people we seek, and our size helps foster close student-instructor interaction.

Figures from our 2018 graduating class support those notions as well:

  • 76% of students who graduated in 2018 were employed full-time
  • 32% of students who graduated in 2018 were continuing their education
  • 99% of students who graduated in 2018 were either employed, volunteering, participating in the armed forces or continuing education
  • 29% of students who graduated in 2018 and were employed full-time found their career through internship site or contact
  • 90% of students who graduated in 2018 found employment related to their major

All of the previously mentioned facts and a robust array of Academic Support opportunities routinely push our student-athletes to excel in the classroom. Our academic support opportunities also focus on our students as a whole, helping them adjust to college life and how to successfully navigate their Endicott experience.
