Gulls sweep crucial doubleheader from WNEC

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Endicott College softball team won its season-high 10th-straight game as the Gulls swept a doubleheader from the top team in the TCCC, Western New England College, on Thursday afternoon in Springfield, Mass. The Blue and Green picked up a 10-4 win in game one and followed that up with a 9-8 win in game two to complete the twinbill sweep.

The Gulls improved their record to 20-10 overall and 13-5 in The Commonwealth Coast Conference while the Golden Bears fall to 18-13 and 13-3 in the league.

Endicott got off to a fast start in the opener, scoring six runs in the first inning and coasting to the 10-4 win. Endicott’s \#Hayley Hovhanessian\# (Farmington, Conn.) and catcher \#Krista Fales\# (Melrose, Mass.) each had three hits for the Gulls.

Senior shortstop \#Jenna Lazar\# (Milton, Mass.) had two hits and three RBI while freshman \#Byrne Katz\# (Trumbull, Conn.) belted a solo homer in the third. \#Jenna Bortolotti\# (Milton, Mass.) gave up nine hits, but allowed only one earned run with two strikeouts and two walks to improve to 11-5 this season.

Western New England’s Rachel Wyrwa (Methuen, Mass.) had two singles and a double, and scored two runs. Freshman shortstop Jeana Longo (Schenectady, N.Y.) contributed a single and double.

Sarah Lempicki (Southington, Conn.) gave up eight runs and eight hits with two strikeouts and four walks in dropping her first game of the season in six decisions.

In the nightcap, Bortolotti survived a three-run seventh - getting the last out with the tying run on first - to gain the win in relief. She allowed five hits and three unearned runs in 4.2 innings while striking out two with no walks.

The Gulls again struck early, taking a 4-0 lead in the first and 8-0 advantage after their top of the third, before the Golden Bears rallied with five runs in the bottom of the frame.

Junior center fielder \#Ashley Wright\# (Merrimack, N.H.) singled and smacked a two-run homer in the first while \#Nicole Devlin\# (Dudley, Mass.) also slugged a two-run homer in the inning and had a sacrifice fly for three RBI.

Hovhanessian and shortstop \#Jocelyn Russo\# (Middletown, Conn.) each chipped-in with a pair of hits.

WNEC collected 12 hits highlighted by a three-run homer by senior centerfielder Lauren Arsenault (Fitchburg, Mass.) in the third. Longo had another two-hit outing while senior Trish Breault (Millville, Mass.) had two singles. Sophomore pitcher Meagan Riemann (Thompson, Conn.) (6-6) took the loss.

Endicott return to action on Sunday afternoon when EC hosts Wentworth in a TCCC doubleheader scheduled for 12:00 p.m. at the softball stadium.
