BEVERLY, Mass. – The Endicott College softball team picked up its first doubleheader sweep of the season as the Gulls defeated Wheaton College by scores of 10-2 and 6-5 in non-conference softball action on Wednesday afternoon in Beverly, Mass. Endicott’s \#Nicole Devlin\# (Dudley, Mass.) drew a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the seventh inning to give the Gulls the win in game two. With the wins, EC improves to 12-10 overall this season while the Lyons fall to 13-13.

Wheaton struck first in the top of the first as Kristen Hunt (Milford, Conn.) scored on an error by \#Jill Wiseman\# (Holden, Mass.) that gave the Lyons a 1-0 lead. Endicott responded with three runs of their own in the bottom of the first as the Gulls loaded the bases and scored their first run on a \#Katherine McGann\# (Topsfield, Mass.) walk to tie the game 1-1. \#Jenna Lazar\# (Milton, Mass.) would score on a wild pitch before \#Ashley Wright\# (Merrimack, N.H.) notched an RBI single to give Endicott the 3-1 lead. The Gulls tacked on one more in the bottom of the second as McGann forced another bases-loaded walk for her second RBI of the day.

Wheaton got one back in the top of the fifth but Endicott scored a combined six runs in the fifth and sixth innings to push their lead to eight and end the game in the sixth inning. \#Krista Fales\# (Melrose, Mass.), \#Katelyn Soja\# (Chicopee, Mass.), Wright, \#Byrne Katz\# (Trumbull, Conn.) and Devlin all picked up RBI’s in the final two innings.

\#Jenna Bortolotti\# (Milton, Mass.) won her fifth straight start by going six innings and scattering four hits while giving up only two runs (one earned), despite walking eight batters. Wright went 3-for-4 with a pair of RBI to lead the offense while McGann added a pair of RBI while going 1-for-2.

The Lyons were led by a 2-for-4 day from Kristen Hunt while Katy Salka (Ayer, Mass.) and Brittany Calarese (Norwood, Mass.) also registered hits. Lesley Warn (Portland, Maine) suffered the setback for the visitors, going six innings while giving up 10 hits and 10 runs (eight earned) while walking seven.

Wheaton took an early lead in game two as the Lyons posted three runs in the opening frame. Calarese and Amanda Poplaski (North Reading, Mass.) led off the game with back-to-back singles while Calarese came around to score on a wild pitch. Nicole DeRosa (Greenwich, Conn.) and Rachel Merrick (Methuen, Mass.) added RBI singles in the inning to grab the 3-0 lead.

Trailing 4-1 in the bottom of the third, Endicott put up three runs on the Lyons as \#Merry MacDonald\# (Braintree, Mass.) had an RBI single and \#Hayley Hovhanessian\# (Farmington, Conn.) added a 2 RBI single to tie the game at 4 apiece. Wheaton was quick to respond in the top of the fourth as Katy Salka hit a towering homerun off the rock façade in right centerfield to take a 5-4 lead.

The Gulls tied the game in the bottom of the fifth when \#Kelly Tenney\# (Sandy Hook, Conn.) drove in \#Ashley Wright\# by beating out an infield single that allowed Wright to score from second. Both teams were held scoreless in the sixth and \#Kayla Carignan\# (Laconia, N.H.), pitching in relief, tossed a perfect seventh to set the stage for Endicott to walk off with a win. \#Merry MacDonald\# began the inning with a single to shortstop followed by a walk from McGann as both runners moved into scoring position via a sacrifice bunt from \#Ashley Wright\#. \#Hayley Hovhanessian\# was hit by a Rachel Merrick offering that loaded the bases and brought up pinch-hitter \#Nicole Devlin\#. Devlin worked a 3-1 count before Merrick’s pitch sailed wide of the plate and allowed MacDonald to score the winning run.

\#Megan Downey\# (Ballston Lake, N.Y.) and MacDonald led the offensive attack for EC as the duo went 5-for-8 at the plate with a pair of RBI and four runs scored. \#Kayla Carignan\# picked up the win in relief while throwing 3.2 innings and allowing only one baserunner via a single.

Wheaton was led by 2-for-4 days from Salka, DeRosa and Merrick as they combined for four RBI. Rachel Merrick suffered the defeat for the Lyons while going 2.1 innings and giving up three runs (two earned) and three walks.

The Gulls return to action on Thursday as they travel across town lines for a TCCC doubleheader against conference rival Gordon College scheduled to start at 3:00 p.m. Wheaton looks to snap a nine game losing streak when the Lyons travel to MIT for a doubleheader starting at 3:00 p.m. on Friday.
