Gulls top Naz, fall to Pride

ORLANDO, Fla. – The Endicott College softball team split a pair of games against Nazareth College and Springfield College on day one of the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, Fla. The Gulls defeated Nazareth, 3-2, on a walk-off RBI single in the seventh inning by \#Merry MacDonald\# (Braintree, Mass.), but fell to Springfield College, 2-1, in their second game of the day.

Against the Golden Flyers, the Gulls fell behind 1-0 as Nazareth got a pair of doubles in the top of the second inning from Brittany Patenaude (Watertown, N.Y.) and Katie Valerio (Pittsford, N.Y.). Endicott responded in the bottom half of the third as \#Megan Downey\# (Ballston Lake, N.Y.) scored on an error by the catcher and \#Katherine McGann\# (Topsfield, Mass.) bunted home \#Jenna Lazar\# (Milton, Mass.) to give the Gulls a 2-1 lead.

Nazareth tied the game in the next half inning as Mandy Weakley (Cold Brook, N.Y.) scored on an error by \#Merry MacDonald\#. Both teams would go scoreless until the bottom of the seventh when MacDonald made up for her earlier gaffe with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, the senior third basemen roped an RBI single and gave Endicott a walk-off win in their first game of the season.

The Gulls were only able to muster six hits off Nazareth pitching with McGann and MacDonald picking up hits and an RBI each. Endicott’s \#Kayla Carignan\# (Laconia, N.H.) picked up her first collegiate win as the freshman went seven innings, giving up eight hits, one earned run and striking out five.

Nazareth’s Brittany Patenaude was a perfect 3-for-3 on the afternoon while Katie Valerio had one hit and an RBI. Casey Mathers (Cassadaga, N.Y.) suffered the setback for the Golden Flyers while going 6.2 innings, giving up two earned runs and also striking out five.

In game two of the day, the Gulls fell behind early again as Springfield grabbed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second when Chelsea Bender (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) had an RBI single to third base that scored Bryn Worrilow (North Babylon, N.Y.). The Gulls tied the game at one when MacDonald had an RBI single that scored \#Jenna Lazar\# but the Gulls would give it back in the bottom of the sixth when Bender struck again with another RBI single. The Gulls had no answer in the top of the seventh despite getting two runners on base in the inning.

MacDonald had two of the five Endicott hits and drove in the lone run for the Gulls. \#Jenna Bortolotti\# (Milton, Mass.) gave up two earned runs on seven hits in six innings of work in the loss.

Springfield received two hits apiece from Chelsea Bender and Michelle Wlosek (Nutley, N.J.) with Bender driving in a pair for the Pride. Megan Fitzgerald (Troy, N.Y.) picked up the win for Springfield by going seven innings and giving up one run on five hits with four strikeouts.

The Blue and Green return to action tomorrow when the Gulls face Fontbonne University at 1:00 p.m. followed by a 3:00 p.m. game against Wisconsin River-Falls.
