CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — The Endicott women's basketball team pulled away from MIT, 75-61, in Monday afternoon's non-conference action from Rockwell Cage.
Libby Fleming (Bangor, Maine) led the way with a 17-point (7-11 FG), seven-rebound effort from the floor. She also picked up a steal and block in the win.
Emma Shinney (Wakefield, Mass.) stuffed the stat sheet per usual. She dropped 13 points (5-13 FG, 3-3 FT), seven assists, five rebounds, and a block in 34 minutes of play.
Cora Nadeau (Newport, Vt.) and Tenley Wallin (Danbury, Conn.) rounded out the double-digit scorers for the Gulls. Nadeau posted 14 points (5-12 FG, 4-10 3PT), while Wallin supplied 10 (2-3 FG, 1-2 3PT) in her first start of the season.
Trailing 11-4 with 3:04 to play in the first quarter, the Gulls strung together a 6-0 run to make it a one-point game with just over a minute to play in the stanza. Shinney and Katelyn Konareski (Milford, Conn.) led the charge in the mini-surge.
Throughout the second quarter, the two teams exchanged baskets pretty frequently. A second chance bucket for Alyssa Garabedian (Cheshire, Mass.) put the Blue and Green in front 26-23 with 3:52 remaining in the half, but the Engineers closed on a 7-2 run to pull ahead 30-28 heading to the break.
To open up the third quarter, the Gulls ripped off a quick 6-0 run to retake the lead, but MIT responded with its own 7-2 spurt to flip the switch once more. However, an 11-3 run handed the Gulls a 47-40 advantage with 1:25 to play in the quarter, and they would not relinquish that lead the rest of the way.
The game-defining 11-3 spurt (5:22-1:25) was spearheaded by Fleming (three layups), Shinney (floater in the lane), and Wallin (two-for-two on free throws).
The fourth quarter was all Gulls, as they outscored the hosts 26-17. Their ability to force turnovers and convert off of those opportunities wound up sealing the deal in the matchup, finalizing a 75-61 victory.
