BEVERLY, Mass. - The Endicott College women's tennis team posted a decisive, 8-1, decision in the Gulls' TCCC opener against Western New England College on Wednesday afternoon in Beverly, Mass. The win moves Endicott to 2-0, while WNEC slips to 0-2.
The Gulls got off to a hot start as the Blue and Green swept their way through doubles play to quickly take a 3-0 lead. Nicole Breting (Johnston, R.I.) and teammate Lori Wardner (Wrentham, Mass.) posted an 8-2 victory over Kristen Ayers (Acton, Mass.) and Nicole DeSimone (Feeding Hills, Mass.). TCCC Rookie of the Week Kate Cioffi (Essex, Vt.) paired with Alyson Boehm (Lowell, Mass.) to notch an 8-2 win over Nicole Freed (Jersey Shore, Pa.) and Jessica Haffner (Suffield, Conn.). Seniors Kate Fiske (Westerly, R.I.) and Genevieve Sherman (York, Maine) were also victorious, downing Kelly Murnane (Cheshire, Conn.) and Christina Barbarisi (Feeding Hills, Mass.), 8-4.
In singles play Endicott took five of the six matches to earn the 8-1 win. Kate Cioffi was dominant in the No. 1 spot, defeating Kristen Ayers, 6-0, 6-1. Nicole Breting, Lori Wardner, Alyson Boehm, and Jenna Carme (Greenfield, Mass.) were also winners for the Blue and Green. Kelly Murnane was the lone Golden Bear to win a singles match, as she downed Kate Fiske, 7-6 (9-7), 6-1.
Endicott continues its brutal stretch of four matches in four days on Thursday as the Gulls travel to North Shore neighbor Salem State College for a 3:30 p.m. showdown with the Vikings. Western New England searches for its first win of the season on Saturday against Roger Williams.
