Gulls sweep Regis in TCCC double header

BEVERLY, Mass. - The Endicott College softball team swept a double header against Regis College by scores of 9-1 and 8-2 on Saturday afternoon in Beverly, Mass.

The Gulls got it going early in game one, scoring four runs in the bottom of the first. Junior Meghan Sargent (Salisbury, Mass/Triton Regional) delivered a two-run homer during the rally, while sophomore Merry MacDonald (Braintree, Mass./Braintree) added an RBI double.

Endicott would continue to apply the pressure, scoring two more runs in the second. The Blue and Green got singles from sophomore Megan Downey (Ballston Lake, NY/Shenendehowa) and senior Rachel Pearson (Gales Ferry, CT/Ledyard), as well as a double off the bat of senior Paula McGinn (Lynn, Mass./Lynn Classical).

In the bottom of the fourth the Gulls used an RBI ground out from Paula McGinn, and a two-run homer from Rachel Pearson to tack on three more runs, making the score 9-0.

The Pride finally got to Endicott starter Jackie Collier (Swampscott, Mass./Bishop Fenwick) in the top of the fifth, scratching out a run on a sacrifice fly from senior Ashley Kiley (New Haven, CT/The Sound School) that scored freshman Amanda Carlson (Ayer, Mass./Ayer). It would be too little too late, as the Gulls took the first game by way of the mercy rule 9-1.

Junior Kristen Tavares (Acushnet, Mass./New Bedford) took the loss for the Pride, giving up nine runs on eight hits in four innings of work.

Jackie Collier earned the win for the Gulls, improving her record to a perfect 3-0 on the season. Collier surrendered just one run on five hits over five innings. The Blue and Green were led offensively by Rachel Pearson, who was 2-3 with two runs scored and three RBI, including a two-run homer. Endicott continued their hitting ways early in the second game. With two outs in the first, the Gulls utilized an RBI double from Meghan Sargent, and an RBI single from senior Danielle Sargent (Sabattus, Maine/Oak Hill) to build a 2-0 lead.

After adding another run in the second, Endicott rallied again in the third. The Gulls scored five runs on four hits, including a two-run double by designated hitter Meghan Sargent, to take a 8-0 lead.

Regis battled back in the top of the fourth, capitalizing on two Endicott errors to push across two runs, including an RBI single from senior Cortney Coles (Wareham, Mass/Wareham).

That would be all Endicott starter Jenna Bortolotti (Milton, Mass./Milton) would give up on the day, as the Gulls went on to win by the final score of 8-2

Once again Tavares took the loss for the Pride, dropping her record to 9-6 on the season. Tavares gave up eight runs on nine hits in just three innings in the loss.

Freshman Jenna Bortolotti earned her first career win for the Gulls, making her 1-0 on the season. Bortolotti pitched all seven innings surrendering just one earned run on only three hits, while striking out seven. The Blue and Green were paced offensively by Meghan Sargent who was 3-4 with two doubles, two runs scored, and two RBI in the win.

The Pride have now lost four straight, dropping their overall record to 9-7, going 4-4 in the TCCC. The sweep improves the Gulls to 13-2 overall, and are now 5-1 in the TCCC. Endicott will return to the diamond on Sunday when they travel to Biddeford, Maine to take on the University of New England in a double header. Game times are scheduled for 12:00 and 2:00 p.m.
