OSCEOLA, Fla. - The Endicott College softball team used another strong outing from Jenn Elwell to defeat Trinity 8-0 in five innings at Osceola Park in Osceola Fla. on Wednesday evening.
The Gulls got things going in the second inning, when sophomore Merry MacDonald (Braintree, Mass./Braintree) hit an RBI single scoring catcher Meghan Sargent (Salisbury, Mass./Triton Regional) to give Endicott a 1-0 lead.
EC came to bat in the third and exploded for seven runs. Shortstop Jenna Lazar (Milton, Mass./Milton) got things started with a leadoff single. After Danielle Sargent (Sabattus, Maine/Oak Hill) reached on an error and Meghan Sargent drew a walk, senior Rachel Pearson (Gales Ferry, Conn./Ledyard) drove Lazar home while reaching on a fielder's choice. Junior Casey Shanley (Billerica, Mass./Billerica Memorial) followed with an RBI single scoring Danielle Sargent, making the score 3-0. After Sarah Spaziano (Norton, Mass./Norton) drew a bases loaded walk, Merry MacDonald delivered a bases clearing triple, vaulting the Gulls to a 7-0 lead. Endicott finished the seven run rally with an RBI ground out from Megan Downey (Ballston Lake, N.Y./Shenendehowa), making the score 8-0. From there, Endicott starter Jenn Elwell (Tewksbury, Mass./Shawsheen Tech) put the finishing touches on her second complete game shutout of the season. The game was called after five innings due to the mercy rule. With the win the Gulls are now 7-1 on the season.
Elwell earned the win for Gulls, improving her record to 3-1. She held the Bantams without a run on just four hits. She struck out four and walked only one in her five innings of work. Merry MacDonald led the Gulls on offense going 2-3 with four RBI and a run scored. Sophomore Jenna Lazar also had two hits, going 2-3 with a run scored in the win.
Sophomore Gabrielle Sergi (Walpole, Mass./Walpole) took the loss for the Bantams, giving up eight runs on six hits and four walks.
Endicott will return to the diamond on Thursday taking on SUNY Geneseo at 9 a.m., and then MCLA at 1 p.m. Both games will be held at Osceola Park in Osceola, Fla.
