(Beverly, MA) Nichols' starting pitcher, Chris Demers, was the story in game two of the Endicott/Nichols doubleheader. He cruised through six innings throwing a no-hitter against the Gulls and facing just two more than the minimum.
His hitters supported him with one in the third and two in the fifth to take a 3-0 lead off Endicott starter Jack Brancaleone. Brancaleone allowed only five hits and 2 earned runs and deserved a better fate.
In the bottom of the seventh with one out it looked like fate might be on his side. Greg Allain hit a towering home run to right to make it 3-1. The very next hitter, Matt Bishop, followed with his own blast to straight away center field to make it 3-2. Pat Vincent then hit a triple to really give the Gulls some life. Nichols skipper, Brian Lambert, stuck with his man and Demers got a strike out and ground ball to end the game with the tying run at third.
The loss drops Endicott to 5-8 and improves Nichols to 4-5. The Gulls next game is tomorrow (Sunday) against Anna Maria. The site has been changed to home because of poor field conditions at Anna Maria.
