Port Charlotte, FL-Endicott lost twice to St. Norbert College of Wisconsin, last year's Midwest Conference champions, 4-1 and 4-2.
In game one, Endicott starter, Matt Bishop, pitched a scoreless first inning, but had control problems in the second and third. He took the loss by allowing three runs in three innings on two hits and five walks. Freshman Ian McCarthy pitched three innings and allowed a run in the sixth. Another freshman, Mike Daggett, pitched a scoreless seventh.
Endicott closed the gap to 3-1 in the fifth when Pat Vincent hit a one out triple to deep left center. Jason Newham scored him on a sacrifice fly to right. In all, Endicott finished with five hits and left four runners on, while St. Norbert had seven hits and left seven on.
In game two, Endicott jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the third on three consecutive hits. Stephen Vidmosko and Dave Babiarz singled and Mike Lucas doubled home Vidmosko. Greg Allain then hit a sacrifice fly to center to score Babiarz.
St. Norbert answered with three runs of their own in the bottom of third off Endicott starter Jon Trowt. Trowt mixed his pitches well in the first two innings, but was touched up for four consecutive hits in the third. The damage was minimized by an inning ending 4-6-3 double play. Trowt pitched six innings and allowed four runs on 10 hits.
Head Coach Larry Hiser commented, "St. Norbert is a tough team with good hitters up and down their lineup. We are playing good defense, pitching fairly well and hitting the ball hard but right at people. Once we get a couple to fall, the confidence and runs will increase."
The losses drop Endicott to 1-2. The Gulls return to action on March 16th against St. Michael's College (VT) in Port Charlotte.
