GRANVILLE, Ohio - Denison University sophomore (Clare Meernik (Redford, Mich.) scored in the 79th minute to propel the 20th-ranked Big Red past visiting Endicott, 1-0, on Saturday afternoon at Barclay-Thomsen Field in Granville, Ohio. The Gulls fall to 0-2 while Denison improves to 2-0 on the season.
The Big Red held an 11-2 advantage in shots, including 4-1 shots on goal in the opening 45 minutes. The Big Red had a golden chance 15 minutes into the second period to break the 0-0 tie when junior Maggie Hoskin (Chicago, Ill.) had a one-on-one with Gulls' keeper Nicole Lawlor (Mansfield, Mass.), but an impressive save kept the match scoreless.
Denison notched the only tally of the game in at the 78:41 mark when Meernik stepped around the Endicott defender and shot it past the challenging goalie into the lower left corner. Meernik's goal was started by a pass from senior captain Anna Rusch (Washington, D.C.). Densison Senior goalkeeper Courtney Cobb (Sylvania, Ohio St.). made one stop, while Lawlor finished the contest with eight saves.
Endicott looks to break the early two-game skid on Sunday when they square-off with Ohio Wesleyan at 12:00 p.m. The Big Red return to action on Sunday when they host Alma College at 11:00 a.m.
