WELLESLEY, MA - A day after falling to Montclair State University, 2-0, the Endicott women's soccer team regrouped to defeat Simmons College, 2-1, in the Consolation Game of the Wellesley College Invitational Tournament in Wellesley, MA.
Following a scoreless first half in which Endicott outshot the Sharks, 14-1; the Gulls finally broke the scoreless tie. At the 7:13 mark of the second half, Endicott scored its first goal of the season as senior Ashley Clark (E. Kinston, NH/Pentucket Regional) took a pass from senior Paula McGinn (Lynn, MA/Lynn Classical) and placed the ball inside the left goalpost to put Endicott up, 1-0.
The Sharks knotted game at 1-all with 31:04 remaining as freshman Brooke MacKenzie (Mansfield, MA) buried a free-kick from 25 yards out to tie the contest.
It was Endicott, however, that would strike last. Senior midfielder Margreta Weber (Bedford, NH/Manchester West) gave the Gulls their first win of the season as she beat Simmons' goalkeeper Rachel Elliot (Amherst, NH) with 5:14 remaining in regulation to propel the Gulls to a, 2-1, victory.
Simmons' goalkeeper Rachel Elliot was stellar in the Consolation Game as she singled-handedly kept the Sharks alive. Elliot finished the afternoon with 16 saves as Simmons was outshot, 30-3, in the contest.
With the win, Endicott improves to 1-2 on the season. The Gulls open Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) play on Wednesday afternoon as the Blue and Green travel to Henniker, NH to take on New England College. Game time is slated for 4:00 PM against the Pilgrims.
