Softball Drops Two On Day Three In Florida

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. — The Endicott softball team lost to Chicago (2-1, 9 inn.) and No. 11 nationally ranked Case Western Reserve (3-0) on Tuesday afternoon at DiamondPlex.

GAME ONE: Chicago 2, Endicott 1 (9 inn.)

WP (3-1): Paige Heffke (North Royalton, Ohio) — 9 IP, 7 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 10 K
LP (1-2): Jaylin Couto (Taunton, Mass.) — 9 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 11 K

Tied 1-1 in the top of the ninth inning, Chicago manufactured the eventual game-winning run in extras on a sacrifice bunt and a sac fly to left field.

Endicott did find a way to move the game-tying run 60-feet away in the bottom half, but a ground ball deep in the hole at second was converted by the Maroons to secure the win.

Lauren Misiaszek (Londonderry, N.H.) drove in the Gulls' lone run in the eighth via an RBI single to force play into the ninth inning.

GAME TWO: No. 11 Case Western Reserve 3, Endicott 0

WP (6-0): Lexi Miskey (Pittsford, N.Y.) — 7 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 11 K
LP (2-1): Maria Hanchuk (South Windsor, Conn.) — 6 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 2 K

Katie Watts (Swampscott, Mass.) spoiled Miskey's no-hit bid with a single to right field in the top of the seventh inning.

The Spartans scored their first run on a broken double steal in the first, and two more in the second via a double steal and RBI groundout.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORES

  • Couto struck out a career-high 11 batters against Chicago.
  • She also tossed four 1-2-3 innings and retired the first nine batters she faced in order but a miscue kept the third inning alive.
  • Dani Lear (Groveland, Mass.) notched her first collegiate hit and multi-hit game (2-for-4) in the first matchup of the day.
  • The Gulls played both Chicago and Case Western Reserve for the first time in program history.
