BEVERLY, Mass. – Endicott men's ice hockey sophomore defenseman Carter Horwitz (Tustin, Calif.) has been named to the Maccabi USA Open Men's Ice Hockey team for the 20th Maccabiah Games, held in July 2017. The Maccabiah Games are an international gathering of thousands of Jewish athletes that takes place in Israel. The 22-man USA Roster will consist of approximately 10-12 NCAA D1 student-athletes, 8-10 NCAA Division III student-athletes and two professional players.
"I can't express how excited I am to be appointed to the Maccabi USA team," Horwitz. "It's something I've dreamed about. I get chills thinking about putting on the sweater and I can't wait to experience it in Israel. I am very thankful [for the opportunity to play]."
As a freshman with the Endicott men's ice hockey program, Horwitz earned Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Northeast All-Conference first team honors and All-Rookie Team accolades, to go along with a selection to the Dean's List.
Horwitz also ranked No. 21 in the country in points per game (0.70) among all NCAA Division II & III rookie defensemen and No. 43 in points per game among all rookies. In 27 games played last season, Horwitz scored eight goals and dished out 11 assists for 19 points, and recorded over 40 blocked shots.
The 20th World Maccabiah Games are the world's third largest international sporting event and will consist of over 9,000 athletes from 75 countries participating in 42 different sports. To learn more about the sports and age divisions offered, visit their website.
The World Maccabiah Games are more than an international sporting competition; they are a celebration of Jewish culture, unity and pride. ISRAEL CONNECT, Maccabi USA's unique cultural and educational program, takes place for seven days prior to the start of the Games. All Juniors, Youth, Open and Paralympic athletes must participate in the program, where they have the opportunity to tour historical and religious sites, take part in cultural identity seminars and train with their teams, all while developing lifelong relationships.
