QUINCY, Mass. - Eastern Nazarene's home opener ended with a
tough loss against the visiting Gulls of Endicott. The Lions drop
to 0-2 in 2011 with the 8-1 defeat; both ENC losses have been
sustained against Commonwealth Coast Conference opponents. With the
win, the Gulls improve to an impressive 3-0 on the season and 2-0
in CCC play.
The Lions
took their sole point of the day in \#1 doubles play. ENC juniors
Elise Sleeper and Sharon Lemire defeated junior Gina Pinciaro
(Beverly, Mass.) and sophomore Emily Marcello (Greenwood, Ind.) 9-7
for the Lions first point of the 2011 season.
Endicott
went on to take the remaining two doubles matches, as junior Rachel
Fenstermaker (Somerset, Mass.) and senior Kristen DiFillippo
(Lynnfield, Mass.) defeated senior Alison Cornell and junior
Samantha Jones, 8-0. Freshman Chrissy Martel (Westbrook, Conn.) and
sophomore Melanie Weineck (Colchester, Conn.) zeroed freshman Cara
Nelson and sophomore Juju Atwater, 6-0, 6-0.
The Gulls
swept the individual matches, beating ENC's number one through six.
Gulls \#1 player, senior Kate Cioffi (Essex, Vt.) defeated Lemire,
6-1, 6-0. Endicott's \#2 Pinciaro got the best of Sleeper, winning
6-1, 6-1. In the \#3 match sophomore Emily McDonough (West
Hartford, Conn.) bested ENC's Jones, 6-1, 6-2. The \#4 match was
more of the same, with Gull freshman Chrissy Martel (Westbrook,
Conn.) knocking off Cornell, 6-1, 6-1. Eastern Nazarene's junior
Monica Gonzales posted more scores than her teammate's but lost to
the Gulls DiFillipo, 6-2, 6-2. The final singles match of the day
was between ENC's Nelson and Endicott junior Ashley Sullivan
(Concord, N.H.). Sullivan topped Nelson, 6-1, 6-0.
The Lions will face non-conference opponent Mount Ida in Newton, Mass. on Monday, September 12th at 3:00pm. Endicott will travel to Bristol, R.I. to face Roger Williams on September 14th at 4:00pm.
