Biddeford, ME--The EC Gulls defeated the University of New England by a score of 4-1. Once again, the EC attack was led by junior forward Leah Walters. Scoring two goals in the victory, Walters helped EC to an outstanding Commonwealth Coast Conference record of 12-0. The conference record marks the first time in women's soccer history that the team was named regular season CCC champions and the first time the team went undefeated in CCC regular season play.
In the 15th mintue of play, Walters tied the score at 1-1, when she completed a cross from Jillian Zagura. EC would take the lead in the 40th minute when sophomore Katie Cederberg found the back of the net, scoring the game-winner and giving the Gulls a 2-1 advantage.
Also scoring for EC was freshman Laura Fraser at the 53:28 mark. Shooting from outside the 18-yard box, Fraser drilled a shot past the UNE goalkeeper. Walters would cap the score at 4-1 in the 67th minute of play.
Their impressive overall record of 15-2-1 has gained regional recognition. On October 27th, the NSCAA and the NCAA released regional rankings and for the first time in the same week, the Gulls are ranked in the top ten in the NSCAA New England Region and in the top ten in NCAA regional rankings. In addition, eight out of nine NSCAA polls, EC has been ranked in the top 15.
Playoffs begin this Saturday, November 1st when EC hosts Roger Williams University in the first round.
