Boxscore

Beverly, Mass. - Visiting SUNY New Paltz snapped Endicott’s four-match win streak and took a North East Collegiate Volleyball (NECVA) matchup, 3-0, on Friday night inside MacDonald Gymnasium. The Hawks narrowly won the first set 27-25 before pulling out the next two by close margins (25-23, 25-20).

Junior Mike Van Tyne (Rochester, N.Y.) recorded a match-high 19 kills in the win while classmate Kevin Stross (Port Washington, N.Y.) added 12 and four blocks. Senior setter Andrew Cassius (Brooklyn, N.Y.) handed out 37 assists for New Paltz, which rebounded from a 3-0 setback to division-rival Stevens on Tuesday.

Endicott (10-9) saw late leads in the first two games slip away en route to its first loss since February 15. Junior outside hitter Jeremy Siden (Natick, Mass.) led the way with ten kills and four digs while sophomore Matt Devendorf (Glastonbury, Conn.) added nine kills of his own. Freshman middle blocker Travis Netherton (Waukegan, Ill.) had eight kills with just one error in 16 attempts for the Gulls.

Endicott capitalized on a pair of early attack errors to take a 5-1 lead in game one. New Paltz (10-8) responded by scoring five of the next six points to level the game at six. The Gulls took a 12-8 lead, their largest of the game, following an attack error by Keith MacDonald (Monroe Township, N.J.). Senior outside hitter Zeke Kubisch (Bethlehem, N.Y.) tallied one of his seven kills on the evening to give the hosts a 22-19 lead. The Hawks rattled off five unanswered points and were serving for the game when Kubisch connected again to keep the Gulls alive. Both sides traded points before the Hawks’ won two straight points and the opener.

The Blue and Green trailed throughout much of game two before a 5-0 run midway through turned a four point deficit into a one point lead (18-17). New Paltz regained the lead shortly after and held on to take a commanding 2-0 lead.

Endicott went up 2-1 in the early stages of game three before two straight points helped New Paltz seize control for good. Netherton had four kills in the deciding game while junior setter Jeremy Schlosser (Emmaus, Pa.) handed out ten assists. Schlosser finished with a team-high 34.

Junior libero Andrew Slocum (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) led the Gulls with six digs while MacDonald paced the Hawks with 11.

Endicott returns to NECVA divisional play with a Tuesday (March 1) double-header against visiting Southern Vermont. New Paltz hosts Ramapo on Wednesday (March 2) at 7 pm.
