Gulls top Leopards 3-0 in NECVA New England action

Endicott junior Jeremy Siden (Natick, Mass.) struck a match-high 10 kills and freshman Travis Netherton (Waukegan, Ill.) was a perfect 8-of-8 on the attack as the Gulls defeated NECVA New England opponent Wentworth Institute of Technology 3-0 (25-18, 25-13, 25-17).

Endicott (3-2, 2-0 NECVA NE) won back-to-back matches for the first time this season thanks a solid team effort on offensive. The Gulls sported a .394 hit percentage with 33 kills with only seven errors. The Blue and Green were strong at the net defensively, compiling 12 team blocks. Netherton led all players with seven, including two solo stops. 

Wentworth (1-4, 0-2 NECVA NE) lost their third match in-a-row, but saw impressive efforts from freshman outside hitter Ross Burdett (Needham, Mass.) and senior Dan Mulvey (Halifax, Mass.). Burdett had a team-high eight kills and Mulvey was a presence at the net with six blocks to go along with five kills. 

The Gulls and Leopards battled through the first set with Endicott holding a slim advantage. Wentworth pulled to within two points at 18-16, but the Blue and Green rallied for the remainder of the set and took seven of the next nine points to win 25-18. The set was capped off by a three-point rally with kills by Matt Devendorf (Glastonbury, Conn.) and Jeremy Siden and a service ace by freshman Brandon Chadwick (Chelmsford, Mass.).

In the second set, Endicott once again held a small lead before rattling off a convincing 8-0 run stretching the lead to 23-9. Carter Roche’s (Clifton Park, N.Y.) serving streak featured two aces by the freshman, helping the Blue and Green to a 25-13 win.

Travis Netherton made five of his seven blocks in the third set to lead the Gulls to a 25-17 final set victory.  

Wentworth seniors Lowell Jesmer (Rochester, N.Y.) and Derek Portugal (Barrington, R.I.) each had six kills in the losing effort and setter Tyler Moriarty (Wilbraham, Mass.) dished out 14 assists. Moriarty also led the team in digs with six. 

Endicott’s Jeremy Schlosser (Emmaus, Pa.) recorded 27 assists and a team-high seven digs in the win. 

Endicott travels to the University of New Haven on Wednesday, January 26 for a 7:00 pm match while Wentworth hosts NECVA New England foe Regis College on Tuesday, January 25 at 7:00 pm.
