Boxscore

Beverly, Mass. – Riding a five-game win streak and sporting the second-best scoring average in The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC), the Endicott field hockey was upset by Western New England College 1-0 at North Field on Saturday afternoon. WNEC’s lone goal scored in the first was all the offense the Golden Bears would need to defeat the Gulls.
The Blue and Green dropped to 5-2 (1-1 TCCC) following the loss while WNEC improved to 3-3 (2-0 TCCC) to remain undefeated in conference play.
Golden Bears senior defender Erin Griffin (Lowell, Mass.) took a shot in front of the net off a penalty corner at 12:50 that found the back of the cage for the game’s only goal. The goal was Griffin’s second of the season, tying her teammate Aimee O’Connell (Rome, N.Y.) for the team lead.
The Gulls challenged the Golden Bears’ defense throughout the entire game, outshooting the opponents 25-5 and winning penalty corners to the tune of a 15-7 advantage.
WNEC’s freshman goalie Brittney O’Brien (Carver, Mass.) was under attack all game but was a rock in the cage as she made 11 saves.
In a scoreless game early in the first half, the Gulls had an excellent opportunity to score after a penalty corner was awarded to the home team. Endicott forward \#Hannah Thornberg\# (Oakland, Maine) had back-to-back shot attempts on goal but O’Brien saved both shots. The Golden Bears would go on to score just over a minute later.
With the visitor’s up 1-0 midway through the second half, the Gulls continued to attack the WNEC goal. Another penalty corner set up senior forward \#Joanne Reid\# (Clarksville, Md.) for a powerful shot inside the circle that hit the goalie’s pads and deflected wide of the cage.
Endicott will look to get back in the win column against Salem State University at home on Wednesday, September 22 at 4:00 pm. WNEC travels to face Mount Holyoke College on Monday, September 21 for a 7:00 pm game.
