Field hockey forecasted to finish third
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) has announced the preseason rankings for the Fall 2010 season and Endicott has been chosen to finish third, it was announced today by Commissioner Gregg M. Kaye. Voting for the preseason poll was conducted among the league’s head field hockey coaches.
The Gulls earned 65 points, trailing only defending champion Nichols College (75 points) and the University of New England (72 points) in the poll. Nichols received six of the nine first-place votes while New England received the other three. New England College (56 points) and Salve Regina (39 points) were picked to finish fourth and fifth, respectively.
The Blue and Green return their entire lineup from a 2009 team which finished with an overall record of 14-9, including a 7-1 mark in conference play. The Gulls fell to New England College in the TCCC semifinals but are poised to make program history in 2010.
Returning for the fall will be Endicott’s top two goal scorers in senior \#Joanne Reid\# (Clarksville, Md.) and junior \#Anna Giannoni\# (Granby, Conn.) who each tallied 10 goals in 2009. Reid also had a team-high seven assists and 27 points while Giannoni added two assists for a total of 22 points. Both players were honored as TCCC First Team All-Conference players and NFHCA DIII All-New England East Region Second Team members.
Goaltender \#Taylor Teixeira\# (Exeter, N.H.) logged every minute in the cage for Endicott, earning TCCC Second Team honors by sporting a 1.79 goals against average and a .806 save percentage in 21 starts.
The Gulls will benefit from great depth this season, featuring seven seniors with big-game experience and a handful of underclassmen ready to make immediate contributions.
Endicott has once again packed its schedule with tough non-conference opponents to go along with a competitive TCCC schedule. The Blue and Green will face NCAA qualifier UMass Dartmouth on September 14 in North Dartmouth and last year’s TCCC winner Nichols College on October 12 at home. The season opener will be on September 1 on the road at Babson College and the home opener will be a week later on September 8 against SUNY New Paltz.
