James Lewis Earns CoSIDA Academic All-America® Second Team Honors

BEVERLY, Mass. – Endicott senior defensive lineman James Lewis (New Fairfield, Conn.) has been named to the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-America® Division III Football Second Team, as announced by the organization earlier today.

The CoSIDA Academic All-America® program is the longest-running and most prestigious academic and athlete award for student-athletes. The program receives 20,000 nominations yearly and selects 4,000 all-district and 1,500 All-America honorees each year. The CoSIDA Academic All-America® program was established in 1952.

Meanwhile, as for Lewis, he is now the fifth CoSIDA Academic All-American in program history joining two-time honoree Craig Anderson '17 (Franklin, Mass.), Endicott Hall of Famer Michael Lane '12 (Medfield, Mass.), and Mike Zupkosky '12 (Westford, Mass.) on the list.

On the football field this year, Lewis started in all 11 games for the Gulls, who went 9-2 overall and 6-1 in conference play on the season en route to capturing the New England Bowl Championship over Dean College, 52-10.

Lewis compiled 30 tackles (13 solo, 17 assisted, 2.7 per game) on the season, which included 6.5 tackles for a loss (23 yards), two sacks (nine yards), one pass breakup, three quarterback hurries, and one blocked kick.

Academically, Lewis sports a 3.87 cumulative grade point average (GPA) as a nursing major and certified nursing assistant at Endicott. Lewis has received six Dean's List honors in his career and two Academic All-Conference honors. By season's end, Lewis will have earned three Academic All-Conference honors.

Lewis also is a member of the Phi Sigma Biological Sciences Honor Society, the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing, the Student Nurse Association, L.E.A.D. – Leaders of the Endicott Athletics Department, and serves as a volunteer for the Miracle League.

Along with those merits, Lewis' clinical experiences include acute care (Steward Holy Family), pediatrics (Boston Children's Hospital), maternity (Beverly Hospital), psychiatric (McLean Hospital), medical-surgical (Tufts Medical Center), and fundamentals of nursing (Tufts Medical Center).

In addition to his clinical experiences, Lewis is currently interning at Yale New Haven Health as a student nurse. Lewis has performed several clinical skills and provided patient care in the emergency department. He also has shadowed and observed registered nurses and other members of the healthcare team. Lastly, Lewis has attended educational programs that have addressed topics to professional nursing, had experiences in the trauma unit, operating room, burn unit, medical intensive care unit, dialysis unit, and cardiac intensive care unit.

All of these experiences will aid Lewis in completing his thesis which is titled "Discharge Communication and Hospital Readmission Rates in Acute Care."

Lewis is the only Commonwealth Coast Football (CCC Football) student-athlete named to this year's CoSIDA Academic All-America® list.
Lewis was one of seven New England student-athletes to earn a spot on this year's CoSIDA Academic All-America® list.
Anderson and former men's ice hockey student-athlete Thomas Pisciotta '18 M'19 (St. Louis, Mo.) are the only student-athletes in Endicott Athletics history to claim multiple CoSIDA Academic All-America® honors.
Lewis is the second Endicott student-athlete to receive CoSIDA Academic All-America® laurels this season joining men's soccer student-athlete Evan Couchot (Mason, Ohio) on the list.
Past CoSIDA Academic All-America® honorees include current commissioner and former NBA executive Val Ackerman, MLB manager Joe Girardi, NFL Super Bowl MVPs Peyton Manning and Drew Brees, civil rights activist Harry Edwards, former Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, WNBA standouts Rebecca Lobo, Maya Moore, and Ruth Riley, and former Harlem Globetrotter Lynette Woodard.
