INTERNSHIP INSIGHT: Devin Bower Connects With Students At Revere High School

BEVERLY, Mass. – Endicott College is a pioneer in requiring comprehensive internship experiences in every program of study for undergraduate students. Devin Bower (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.), who is a senior on the football team and a biology & biotechnology major (concentration in secondary education) at Endicott, is currently interning at Revere High School. Here's a look into his internship experience.


ECGULLS: Describe your overall internship experience. 

BOWER: I am interning at Revere High School and can say my overall experience has been a great one. Minus the lack of sleep and the commute, the faculty and students have let me into this community with open arms, and I am extremely grateful for that. 


ECGULLS: What have you learned from your internship?

BOWER: I have learned that there is no such thing as a perfect teacher, and with so many different styles and methods, no set way of doing the job. However, if I strive to be the best I can be and help students fulfill their potential, I am doing my job right. 


ECGULLS: How will this internship help you in your career moving forward?

BOWER: This internship is fully preparing me to teach. With the aid of my classroom teacher, advisors, and other Endicott students, I have no doubt I will be prepared to be an educator when I leave school. 


ECGULLS: What kind of networking have you done at your internship?

BOWER: To get a job in a very competitive field like education, you have to always be networking and spreading your name throughout the administration and the staff at the school. I have done my best to not only present myself in a good way, but also represent Endicott the same. 


ECGULLS: Do you have a favorite experience or story from your internship? If so, what was it?

BOWER: My favorite experience for this internship has to be when an idea finally sticks in a kid's head. I teach an honors biology class as well as a biology class with students who speak little to no English. When I am able to get an idea through to them, and I see their ability to learn to take shape, I know I am doing my job well.

A philosophy of "learning by doing" permeates the college curriculum in which students are encouraged to integrate theory and practice in all of their studies.

Through their experiences in internships students will be prepared to:

  • Apply, integrate, and evaluate knowledge within a particular academic discipline
  • Develop competencies for careers and community service
  • Explore career options and gain field experience
  • Foster personal growth through increased self-confidence, interpersonal skills, an understanding of self and others, and a heightened awareness of ethical standards
  • Improve the ability to learn in a self-directed manner
