COSIDA ACADEMIC ALL-DISTRICT® RELEASE
BEVERLY, Mass. – Endicott football student-athletes James Lewis (New Fairfield, Conn.) and Grayson Maddux (Park City, Utah) have been named to the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) All-District® First Team.
The CoSIDA All-District Team recognizes the top student-athletes for their combined athletic and academic performances. The NCAA Division III District 1 Team includes all schools in Massachusetts and Maine. First-team Academic All-District® honorees advance to the CoSIDA Academic All-America® Team ballot, where first, second and third team All-America® honorees will be selected next month.
To be eligible, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at his current institution and be nominated by his sports information director.
JAMES LEWIS | SENIOR | DL | NURSING
So far this season, Lewis has started in all 10 games on the schedule for the Gulls. In those contests, Lewis has compiled 30 tackles (13 solo, 17 assisted, 6.5 tackles for a loss, two sacks) to go along with three quarterback hurries, and one blocked kicked.
Lewis currently ranks tied for first on the team in sacks, second in quarterback hurries, and No. 10 in tackles.
Academically, Lewis sports a 3.87 cumulative grade point average (GPA) as a nursing major and certified nursing assistant at Endicott. Lewis has received six Dean's List honors in his career and two Academic All-Conference honors. By season's end, Lewis will have earned three Academic All-Conference honors.
Lewis also is a member of the Phi Sigma Biological Sciences Honor Society, the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing, the Student Nurse Association, L.E.A.D. – Leaders of the Endicott Athletics Department, and serves as a volunteer for the Miracle League.
Meanwhile, Lewis' clinical experiences include acute care (Steward Holy Family), pediatrics (Boston Children's Hospital), maternity (Beverly Hospital), psychiatric (McLean Hospital), medical-surgical (Tufts Medical Center), and fundamentals of nursing (Tufts Medical Center).
Along with his clinical experiences, Lewis is currently interning at Yale New Haven Health as a student nurse. Lewis has performed several clinical skills and provided patient care in the emergency department. He also has shadowed and observed registered nurses and other members of the healthcare team. In addition to that, Lewis has attended educational programs that have addressed topics to professional nursing, had experiences in the trauma unit, operating room, burn unit, medical intensive care unit, dialysis unit, and cardiac intensive care unit.
All of these experiences will aid Lewis in completing his thesis which is titled "Discharge Communication and Hospital Readmission Rates in Acute Care."
GRAYSON MADDUX | SENIOR | DL | CRIMINAL JUSTICE
Maddux, who switched from the linebacker position to defensive line this season, has played in all 10 games on the schedule this year (nine starts). In those contests, Maddux has registered 34 tackles (11 solo, 23 assists, 1.5 TFL, one sack) to go along with three interceptions, one pass breakup, and one blocked kick.
Maddux ranks ninth on the team in tackles and tied for first in interceptions (tied second in the conference).
Academically, Maddux has a 3.31 GPA as a criminal justice major.
Maddux's criminal justice experiences include the Federal Public Defenders Office (Salt Lake City) and the Summit County Sheriff's Office. Meanwhile, his volunteer experiences are vast and include Habitat for Humanity, the National Ability Center, the Christian Center of Park City, the Salvation Army, the Adopt-a-Native-Elder program, and the Read Across America program.
During his time with the Federal Public Defenders Office, Maddux recorded discrepancies between court files and files that were subpoenaed from the defendant, transcribed recorded FBI interviews, and organized files to make them more accessible during trial. His experiences with the Summit County Sheriff's Office also included working with the dispatch unit and correction facilities in addition to accompanying officers on multiple ride-along opportunities.
Maddux also is a multiple Dean's List honoree, a one-time Academic All-Conference selection, one of six captains on this year's team, and psychological first aid (PFA) certified.
ABOUT THE COSIDA ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICA® PROGRAM
The CoSIDA Academic All-America® program is the longest-running and most prestigious academic and athlete award for student-athletes. The program receives 20,000 nominations yearly and selects 4,000 all-district and 1,500 All-America honorees each year. The CoSIDA Academic All-America® program was established in 1952.
