BEVERLY, MA - Great players step up in big games. And Saturday Paula McGinn (Lynn, MA/Lynn Classical) showed why she was named the Commonwealth Coast Conference Player of the Year as a sophomore.
The Lynn native scored twice to guide the top-seeded Gulls past rival Gordon College, 2-0, and into the NCAA Division III Tournament Saturday afternoon in the CCC Championship at Endicott College.
It was Endicott's third straight CCC Title and fourth in the last five years. The Gulls (15-3-1) have never lost a CCC game at Endicott Stadium since it opened in 2003. Gordon is now 13-3-2.
The hosts stifled the Fighting Scots' offense, allowing just one shot on goal. Sweeper Staci Wiencko (Pembroke, MA/Notre Dame Academy) sparked the defense, which consisted of senior Katie Cederberg (Grafton, MA/Grafton), junior Meghan Sniegoski (Boxboro, MA/Acton-Boxborough) and senior Allison Lyons (Brooklyn, CT/Killingly).
Meanwhile, Endicott spread the ball around nicely and made it 1-0 on a McGinn header. Jillian Zagura (Hudson, Ma/Hudson) and Wiencko assisted on the tally, which came on a corner kick at the 15:55 mark.
McGinn then recorded the insurance goal six minutes into the second half on a feed from Erica Hunt (Colchester, VT/Colchester).
The Gulls will find out where they are seeded in the NCAA Tournament Sunday night around midnight.
