NORTON, MA -- Wheaton College snuck past Endicott, 1-0, on a Jenna Stiegler (Madison, WI/Middleton) goal late in the first half yesterday in a non-league matchup at Wheaton's Mirrione Stadium.
The Lyons, who reached the Division III NCAA Final Four last year, have not allowed a goal in going 3-0 this season. Wheaton, which ranks third nationally and first in New England by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA), extended their regular season home winning streak to 48 games. Endicott fell to 0-2.
Stiegler netted her unassisted game-winning goal at 40:34 of the first when she collected a giveaway in the Endicott box and blasted a shot home. Sophomore Jenna Rabesa (Teaticket, MA/Falmouth) nearly extended that lead in the 76th minute, but Endicott junior keeper Tina Loguidice (Hyde Park, NY/F.D. Roosevelt) dove to her right and stopped the ball from rolling in. Two minutes later, Rabesa threatened again before being pulled down on a breakaway at 77:49. Wheaton received a free kick because of the foul but was unable to convert.
Wheaton sophomore Stacey Kronenberg (Belchertown, MA/Belchertown) went untested in net to earn her third consecutive shutout, while Loguidice stopped eight shots in the loss for the Gulls. For the game, the Lyons held a 23-3 advantage in shots, including 10-1 in the first half. Wheaton also earned a 9-3 edge in corner kicks.
Endicott goes in search of its first win Saturday when it hosts Wentworth (12:00 P.M.) in its first CCC contest.
