Bates upends women's lacrosse on senior night

Sophomore attack Jenn Brallier (Chambersburg, Pa.) scored four goals while junior Joan O’Neill (Westwood, Mass.) and freshman Bridget Meedzan (Ipswich, Mass.) each added three as the Bates women’s lacrosse team toppled Endicott, 18-6, on Senior Night at Endicott Stadium. The visitors came out firing with eight straight goals to open the game and built a 9-2 halftime lead before outscoring the hosts 9-4 over the final 30 minutes of play.

Freshman Jenna Dannis (Milford, N.H.) and senior Briana Gross (Andover, Mass.) each added two goals for the Bobcats (8-6).

The Gulls (11-6) were led by three goals from sophomore midfield Holly Davis (Guilford, Conn.). Senior Kellie Cunningham (Derry, N.H.) chipped in three goals, five ground balls, and four caused turnovers in the setback while classmate Molly Sowles (Yarmouth, Maine) added a goal and an assist.

Brallier, Meedzan, and O’Neill each scored twice in the opening 20 minutes of play as Bates took a commanding 8-0 lead. 

Junior attack Morgan DeShaw (Danville, N.H.) found Cunningham at 7:19 to stop the run before linking up with Davis less than two minutes later to make it 8-2.

Junior Lindsay Thompson (Ipswich, Mass.) capped the first half scoring with an unassisted tally at 3:55 to give Bates a seven goal lead entering the break.

Cunningham’s second of the evening came just 39 seconds into the second frame after taking a feed from Sowles, but Brallier responded a minute later with her third of the night to push the lead back to seven.

Junior Michelle Loizzo’s (Longmeadow, Mass.) first assist of the season came on Sowles’ goal at 27:13 to pull the Gulls within six. The Bobcats countered with two straight to extend the advantage to 12-4 with just over 20 minutes remaining.

Davis capped Endicott’s scoring with back-to-back goals at 19:32 and 17:27 before Bates rattled off six unanswered to close it out.

Senior goalie Mara Krueger (St. Louis, Mo.) picked up the win in net despite making just three saves.

Junior Leah Neff (South Hadley, Mass.) made 11 saves for the Gulls, who will be the No. 2-seed in the upcoming TCCC Tournament.

Junior midfield Lauren Todd (Newfields, N.H.) chipped in three caused turnovers and five ground balls while senior Carin Czerniawski (Monroe, Conn.) added two caused turnovers of her own.

Bates was led by three caused turnovers apiece from Wally Pierce (Weston, Mass.) and Dannis.

The Bobcats conclude their conference slate with a Friday (April 29) showdown with Colby College at 7:00 pm.
