DeShaw scores seven times in 12-8 Gulls win over Wellesley

Endicott College's Morgan DeShaw (Danville, N.H.) scored seven goals to lead the Gulls to a 12-8 victory over Wellesley College in non-conference women's lacrosse action on a wet, snowy Thursday afternoon in Wellesley. The win lifts Endicott to 6-3 overall, while the Blue drop to 6-2.
 
DeShaw led all players with seven scores, while also adding two caused turnovers and two ground balls. Also for Endicott, Kelly Cunningham (Derry, N.H.) added a pair of scores with four ground balls and two caused turnovers.
 
Holly Davis (Guilford, Conn.) led the Gulls with four draw controls, while Lauren Todd (Newfields, N.H.) and Brittany Kane (Scarborough, Maine) added three draw controls. In net for Endicott, Leah Neff (South Berwick, Maine) picked up nine saves.
 
For Wellesley, Roy scored a season-high five goals to go along with four draw controls. Jenny Holland added a pair of goals while Elizabeth Clemetson added a solo score and four draw controls to round out the offense. Defensively, Nicole Labbee recorded four ground balls and two caused turnovers, while Mary Mattia maded eight saves for the Blue.
 
Endicott held a slim 27-23 advantage in shots and a 17-13 advantage in ground balls, while the teams were even in draw controls at 11-11.
 
After trading two goals in the opening minutes of the first period, Endicott found the net four times in quick succession to take a 6-2 lead. Cunningham started the burst with a free position goal at the 15:26 mark. The Gulls captured the next two draw controls and scored both times, with goals from DeShaw and Michelle Loizzo (Longmeadow, Mass.).  Less than a minute later, Holly Davis tossed in another point to give Endicott a four goal lead with 12:06 left in the period.
 
Wellesley rebounded with back-to-back goals from Roy to cut the lead to 6-4, but the Gulls' Molly Sowles (Yarmouth, Maine) closed out the first half scoring off yet another quick draw control conversion, giving Endicott a 7-4 halftime lead.
 
Endicott opened the second period with three more goals from DeShaw to take a 10-4 lead at the 19-minute mark. Wellesley's Roy and Endicott's DeShaw then traded goals to set the score to 11-5 with 11:37 remaining before the Blue mounted a late comeback.
 
Three straight scores for the Blue from Holland, Clemetson and Roy narrowed the Endicott gap to 11-8 with 3:47 to play, but the Gulls controlled the last two draws and added another score to close out the 12-8 victory.
 
Endicott returns to action on Saturday at noon, when they play host to Curry College.  Wellesley will travel to Bates on Sunday, April 3, when they will battle the Bobcats at 1:30pm.
