Sophomores Lisa Chartier (20 points, 11 rebounds) and Holly Beth Wojcik (13 points, 12 rebounds) each recorded double-doubles as the Endicott College Gulls won their first round CCC tournament game tonight versus visiting Eastern Nazarene. The win advances EC to the semi-finals of the CCC Tournament where they will face cross-town rival Gordon at 6:00pm Thursday night. The CCC semi-final game hosted by top seed Endicott will be their first ever.
Eastern Nazarene, who lost 66-30 in the regular season game to the Gulls, came out fighting tonight, taking the early lead until a free throw by Wojcik tied the game at 9-9. Three more ties and two more lead changes marked the first half before the Gulls took the lead for good on a jumper by Jodi Brown. Despite committing 12 first half turnovers, the Gulls took a 31-26 lead at the half behind 46% field goal shooting.
Sparked by Carly Haynes defense the Gulls went on an 18-5 run to start the second half to take their largest lead of the game, 49-31. The Gulls kept the lead in double-digits for most of the rest of the half, however, the Crusaders never gave up making Endicott earn their first play-off victory. The second half was won from the free throw line as EC shot 25 for 40 from the stripe. Carly Haynes (12 points, 5 assists) and Liz Yuneman (12 points, 2 assists) led the offensive attack in the second half.
Chartier finished the game with 4 assists and 2 steals to go along with her double-double, while Kate Harte came off the bench to spark the Gulls with 3 assists. The Gulls record now stands at 18-8 overall, 15-2 in the CCC.
Eastern Nazarene, who was led by Rebecca Welch (22 points, 11 rebounds) and Brianne Henry (13 points, 12 rebounds), ends their season with a 12-14 record overall, 7-11 in the CCC.
