BEVERLY, MA - Day one of Endicott's March Mania Tournament is in the books. Medaille toppled Endicott in five games to win Pool A and will face Pool D winner, Nazareth. Rivier won Pool B and will face SUNY New Paltz, the winner of Pool C. Both matches are at noon with the winners squaring off in the championship game at 4:00 PM.
Medaille finished 2-0 in Pool A, Endicott was 1-1 and Hunter went 0-2. Medaille beat the Gulls, 3-2 (33-31, 23-30, 30-26, 27-30, 15-10. Brett Wood (Brewerton, NY) led all scorers with 23 kills while Erik Hartman (Hamburg, NY) added 22 kills behind Joe Tilert's (Angola, NY) 61 assists and Drew Lewandowski's (Kenmore, NY) 22 digs.
Clay Ostrander (Wheaton, IL) led Endicott with 19 kills and five blocks and Mike Coflesky (Royalston, MA) added 11 kills. George Chapell (Haverhill, MA) added six blocks and Jeremy Hamel (Industry, ME) handed out 40 assists. Freshman Dan Coleman (Millis, MA) led all players with 26 digs.
In Pool D action, Nazareth defeated Johnson & Wales, 3-1 (30-25, 27-30, 30-21, 32-30). Tom Maving led the way for Nazareth with 22 kills powered by Frank Leahy's (Smithtown, NY) 59 assists. Chris DeHority (Rochester, NY) picked up 14 digs while Joe Petzoldt (Phelps, NY) chipped in 18 kills in the win.
JWU got a combined 29 kills from Den Davies (15) and Sean Lauro (14). Albert Trevino dished out 38 assists and John Kubilis dug up 18 balls.
Rivier dropped Ramapo, 3-1 (30-21, 30-18, 26-30, 30-25) to take Pool B. The Raiders went 2-0 to win the pool, while Ramapo was 1-1 and Wentworth finished 0-2.
Andy Chace (East Providence, RI) knocked 19 kills for Rivier, which also got 17 kills from Zach Stedman (Riverside, RI). Nhut Chau (Lawrence, MA) handed out 50 assists in the win and Javier Laureano (Haverhill, MA) added 15 digs.
Ramapo got 17 kills from David Ross (Perth Amboy, NJ) and 14 kills from Shane Donohue (Freehold, NJ). Jario Sierra (Fair Lawn, NJ) contributed 49 assists and 14 digs.
SUNY New Paltz beat MIT, 3-2 (30-28, 25-30, 30-28, 24-30, 15-11) to win Pool C, behind Ryan Bullard (Smithtown, NY), who had a team-high 20 kills. Jamie Kellogg (Scio, NY) added 13 kills and Matt Weingarten (East Morchias, NY) dished out 55 assists. SUNY New Paltz finished atop Pool C at 2-0, while MIT ended 1-1 and Villa Julie finished 0-2.
Praveen Pamidimukkala (Edison, NJ) led all players with 29 kills, five blocks and 18 digs for MIT. Ryan Dean (Valencia, CA) dished out 52 assists and picked up 16 digs for the Engineers.
