Women’s Tennis Turns Away Eastern Nazarene, 9-0

QUINCY, Mass. – The Endicott women's tennis team pushed its winning streak to four straight matches on Saturday afternoon with a 9-0 league win over Eastern Nazarene. It marks the fourth straight match the Gulls have shut out their opponent. 

No. 1 doubles pairing Maxine Bergstein (Hingham, Mass.) and Gretta Hartman (Glastonbury, Conn.) bumped their record to 5-0 via a swift 8-0 decision, while Hayley Barnett (Marlboro, N.J.) and Reilly Fitzgibbons (Killingtonworth, Conn.) registered an 8-1 triumph at No. 2. Meanwhile, the No. 3 doubles flight was won by default. 

Up 3-0 headed into singles, Hartman notched a 6-1, 6-1 victory against Adele Duval (Redding, Calif.) in the No. 2 slot to give Endicott a 4-0 advantage, and Gillian Freter (Scituate, Mass.) clinched the match with a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 5 over Veronica Jimenez (Lynn, Mass.)

The rest of singles featured victories by Barnett (No. 1, 6-1, 5-5, retired), Fitzgibbons (No. 3, 6-1, 6-3), Lauren Rahr (Waterford, Conn.) – No. 4, 6-0, 6-1 – and Alexandra Barmore (Southington, Conn.) – No. 6, 6-0, 6-0.

"Nice to pick up another conference win," said Endicott women's tennis head coach Jeremy Howard. "Doubles came out of the gate as strong as we've seen this year and really set the tone for the day." 

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • Freter has won her last eight singles matches dating back to April 21, 2017.
  • She is 1-0 at No. 2, 4-0 at No. 4, and 3-0 at No. 5 during that span.
  • As a doubles pairing, Barnett/Fitzgibbons have rattled off seven consecutive victories (also dating back to last year).

WHAT'S NEXT 

Endicott (5-1, 3-1 CCC) hosts Gordon College next Tuesday, September 19 at 3:30 PM. Prior to the match, the Gulls' lone senior, Bergstein, will be honored for her contributions towards the program. Eastern Nazarene (3-1, 2-1 CCC) welcomes Roger Williams to its home court next Tuesday at 3:30 PM.
