Nichols Edges Women’s Tennis, 5-4

BEVERLY, Mass. – In a rematch of last season's Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) championship, Nichols came out on top against Endicott, 5-4, on Thursday evening at the Robinson Tennis Courts.

The Gulls produced a 2-1 advantage at the conclusion of doubles, but the Bison countered with four straight wins in singles to secure the victory.

Endicott saw doubles pairings Gretta Hartman (Glastonbury, Conn.) / Maxine Bergstein (Hingham, Mass.) and Reilly Fitzgibbons (Killingsworth, Conn.) / Hayley Barnett (Marlboro, N.J.) produce wins at the No. 1 (8-0) and No. 2 (8-1) flights, respectively, while Gillian Freter (Scituate, Mass.) and Lauren Rahr (Waterford, Conn.) registered victories at the No. 4 (6-4, 2-6, 6-4) and No. 5 (4-6, 7-5, 10-2) singles spots.

"I'm very happy with our team fight today to the very last ball, despite the end result," said Endicott women's tennis head coach Jeremy Howard. "We saw a super competitive match tonight, and an exciting start to conference play. We're now looking forward to hosting Salve Regina on Saturday."

  • Freter is now 25-10 in singles all-time.
  • Rahr improved to 16-8 in singles action for her career.
  • Hartman/Bergstein are now 2-0 on the season at No. 1 doubles.
  • Fitzgibbons/Barnett are also 2-0 on the year at No. 2 doubles.
  • Last season, Nichols topped Endicott, 5-0, to win the CCC title.

Endicott (1-1, 0-1 CCC) hosts Salve Regina this Saturday in a league matchup at 1 PM. Nichols (3-1, 1-0 CCC) travels to Union (N.Y.) for a pair of non-conference matches this Saturday (11 AM) and Sunday (9 AM).
