CCC Tournament Efforts Give Three Gulls Weekly Honors

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) released the final week of the spring Athletes of the Week awards. After claiming the programs ninth consecutive CCC title the Gulls swept this week's awards as freshman Emily Whitney (Rye, N.H.), and seniors Callie Murphy (Woburn, Mass.) and Kelsey Barnes (Mendham, N.J.) were all recognized for their efforts last week.

CCC Rookie of the Year Emily Whitney helped guide the Gulls to their ninth straight CCC title claiming this week's Rookie of the Week nod and her fifth of the season. The attacker posted seven goals in just two games while recording eight points. In the semifinals match up against cross-town rival Gordon Whitney had a hand in three of the six goals in the first half. In the CCC Championship game she recorded the huge man-up goal that gave the Gulls a lead midway through the half to go along with her three total goals in the buzzer beater victory.

Co-Offensive Player of the Year Callie Murphy posted a stellar two games this week to help bump the Gulls to their ninth straight CCC Title as she takes Offensive Player of the Week honors for the second week in a row. The attacker lead the week with 14 total points while posting the game-winning assist as time expired in the CCC Championship game in the 14-13 victory over Roger Williams. In the semifinals matchup the senior hit three goals and three assists which led to four goals and four assists in the title game.

CCC Defensive Player of the Year Kelsey Barnes posted a strong week in the defensive zone for the Blue and Green as she recorded three caused turnovers and three ground balls in the CCC Championship game and two ground balls and three draw controls in the semifinals. Barnes helped lead a defensive unit this week that improved to 14-3 on the season and claimed the programs ninth consecutive CCC title. This is the first Defensive Player of the Week honor for Barnes.

With the championship victory the Blue and Green have earned an automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament where they will travel to Middlebury on Saturday to face the #8 Panthers in the Second Round. The game is set for a 1:00 start.
