Second Quarter Run Helps No. 20 Men's Lacrosse Down MIT, 16-11

BEVERLY, Mass. – The No. 20 Endicott men's lacrosse team defeated MIT, 16-11, in non-conference action on Wednesday afternoon at Hempstead Stadium. 

Cam Fernandez (Menham, N.J.) led the way for the Gulls with five goals and three assists for eight points.

Colt Green (Honeoye Falls, N.Y.) and Matt Wright (Oregon City, Ore.) both registered multi-goal efforts with four and two goals apiece. Matt Cawley (Westwood, Mass.)Ethan Cupples (Marshfield, Mass.)Nick Graap (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.)Curtis Redd (Amherst, N.H.), and Tommy Tyksinski (Guilderland, N.Y.) all recorded solo tallies in the victory.

In goal, Christopher Tillotson (Monroe, Conn.) stopped eight shots in the first half en route to a 3-0 record this season, while Teagan Alexander (Foxboro, Mass.) made six saves in the second half. At the face-off "X", Thomas Barker (Needham, Mass.) went 22-30 while scooping up 16 groundballs.

Trailing 3-1 at the end of the first quarter, Endicott exploded for six goals as Green cut the lead to one just 34 seconds into the second quarter but was answered by an Engineer goal at the 8:53 mark to regain the two goal advantage. The Gulls then poured in the next five goals as Green (2), Fernandez, Cawley, and Tyksinski all found the back of the net in the span of 6 minutes and 57 seconds to take the Blue and Green from being down 4-2 to now in the lead at 7-4. The Engineers added another goal 19 seconds before halftime as Endicott now led 7-5 at the break.

The Gulls recorded another six goals in the third quarter thanks to Fernandez (3), Redd, Graap, and Wright. Fernandez potted the first three goals of the third quarter as the Gulls extended their lead to as big as five throughout the quarter before leading 13-9 heading to the final 15 minutes.

Goals from Cupples, Green, and Wright in the fourth quarter led the Gulls to a 16-10 lead as MIT added a late tally for a final score of 16-11.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • Endicott is now 8-1 all-time versus MIT and hasn't lost since the first meeting between the two teams back in 2002.
  • Fernandez tied his career high for goals, assists, and points in a game (4/6/24 vs Hartford)
  • Green tied his career high for goals in a game (3/30/24 vs Nichols).
  • Fourth career multi-goal game for Wright.

No. 20 Endicott (3-0) visits Springfield on Friday, March 7 at 7 PM. MIT (2-1) welcomes No. 5 RPI on Saturday, March 8 at 1 PM.
