Men’s Basketball Downs MIT, 75-69; Echevarria Sinks 1,000th Point

BEVERLY, Mass. — The Endicott men's basketball team defeated MIT, 75-69, on Tuesday evening in non-conference action at McDonald Gymnasium. 

With the win, the Gulls improved to 17-12 all-time in season openers. 

Jalen Echevarria (Lynn, Mass.) paced all scorers with a game-high 29 points (9-18 FG, 2-7 3PT, 9-11 FT) to go along with six rebounds and three steals. Echevarria's final two free throws with 19-seconds remaining in the contest put him at 1,000 points even for his career.

Matt Garry (Southington, Conn.) also poured in 17 points in his Endicott debut (7-15 FG, 2-6 3PT, 1-2 FT), while Mark Barrett (Brookline, Mass.) filled the stat sheet with seven points, 12 rebounds, four assists, three blocks, and four steals.

Miles Fiore (Narragansett, R.I.) rounded out the list of highlights with notched nine points (4-6 FG and 1-1 3PT) off the bench in his collegiate debut. 

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • Echevarria becomes the 18th student-athlete in men's basketball program history to score 1,000 points.
  • The Gulls dominated in the paint, 34-18, and in transition, 15-5.
  • Endicott snatched 15 steals, which surpassed last season's best performance in the category (Western New England 1/27/22 I Curry 2/8/22).
  • Tonight's game only featured three ties and four lead changes.
  • Endicott trailed by as many as nine with 3:36 in the first half.
  • The Gulls claimed the lead for good at the 15:15 mark of the second half (44-43).
  • Endicott's biggest advantage ballooned to 14 points with 5:47 remaining in the matchup (66-52).

WHAT'S NEXT

Endicott (1-0) will take on Salem State in the Big 4 Challenge on Saturday, November 19 in Medford, Mass. at 3:00 PM. MIT (1-2) hosts UMass Dartmouth this Saturday, also at 3:00 PM.
