Beverly, MA - The Endicott Gulls (24-14) were selected today as the fourth seed in the 2005 ECAC Division III New England Baseball Championship. With the bid, the Gulls, who will play in their sixth consecutive post season tournament, will face fifth seeded MIT (20-13) in the first round game this Friday, May 20th. Top seeded Bridgewater State College (26-11) will host the contest at 3:30 p.m. The tournament is an eight-team field with quarterfinal and semifinal games held at Bridgewater and at Curry this Friday and Saturday, and the championship game held at Bridgewater on Saturday afternoon.
Friday's game will be the first between the two teams since 2002, when the Gulls defeated the Engineers 25-11. Endicott leads the series 3-1 with wins in 1998, 2001 and 02. MIT's only win came in 1999. This is the third ECAC tournament for Endicott and the fourth for MIT. The Engineers, who won the championship in 1993, have not played in the tournament since 1996. Endicott lost in the first round in 2001 and advanced to the semifinals in 2002.
In other first-round action on Friday, the top seed Bridgewater State will host the No. 8 seed Brandeis University at noon. At Curry College, the No. 3 seed Curry (20-12-2) will host No. 6 Keene State College (22-15) at noon. Also playing at Curry at 3:30 p.m., No. 2 St. Joseph's College (32-9) will play No. 7 seed Babson College (19-18).
The first-round winners will advance to the semifinals on Saturday at the respective site that the first games were played. After the semifinal finale at Curry, the winner will travel to Bridgewater to meet that site's last team standing.
