GORHAM, Maine -- The University of Southern Maine Huskies scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to snap a 5-5 tie and went on to defeat the Endicott College Gulls 7-5 in a non-conference game Tuesday afternoon. The win improved the Huskies overall record to 11-5. Endicott slips to 14-7.
Endicott tied the game at 5-5 in the top of the sixth when freshman C Dan Gomez (East Longmeadow, Mass.), who led off the inning with a triple, scored from third on a wild pitch. The Huskies came right back in the home half of the inning, bunching together two singles, an errant pick off attempt and a groundout to produce the decisive runs.
Sophomore C Max Arsenault (Boothbay, Maine) and sophomore OF Ryan Bourque (Sanford, Maine) opened the inning with back-to-back singles. An errant pick off throw to first base by sophomore P Mike Daggett (Sabbatus, Maine) allowed Arsenault to score from second and Bourque ended up at third. Freshman PH Rich McGraw (Simsbury, Conn.) grounded out bringing in Bourque.
Southern Maine took a 1-0 lead in the third inning on an RBI single by sophomore Pat Kinslow (Westbrook, Maine).
Endicott took a 4-1 advantage in the fourth as the Huskies' defense committed two of its seven errors. After a lead-off single by sophomore Steve Vidmosko (Shelton, Conn.), the next two batters reached on infield errors with Vidmosko scoring on the second error. Gomez hit a sacrifice fly to bring in the Gulls' second run. Back-to-back doubles by sophomore OF Brendan Tiani (New Canaan, Conn.) and senior DH Jon Trowt (Beverly, Mass.) made it 4-1. All four runs were unearned against USM junior starter Brett Rogers (Orr's Island, Maine).
Run-scoring singles by Bourque and freshman OF Eddie Skeffington (Everett, Mass.) cut the deficit to 4-3, and sophomore SS Nick Vardaro (Norwood, Mass.) gave the Huskies a 5-4 lead with a two-run single in the bottom of the fourth. Sophomore Pat Foley (Norwood, Mass.) picked up the win for the Huskies with 3.2 innings of scoreless, one-hit relief. Daggett absorbed the loss despite pitching well in relief of freshman John Bedard (East Longmeadow, MA).
Senior OF Pat Vincent (Manchester, N.H.) was the lone repeat hitter for Endicott with a pair of singles. Skeffington had three hits, and Bourque and Vardaro each had two, for the Huskies.
The Gulls return to action on Wednesday at 3:30 against CCC and North Shore rival, Gordon College at home.
