BOSTON, Massachusetts - The Endicott baseball team pounded out 20 runs and 25 hits to sweep Wentworth Institute of Technology, 11-6 and 9-4, in a Commonwealth Coast Conference doubleheader played at Babson College's Govoni Field.
In the first game Endicott struck for three runs in the top of the third inning as sophomore Jason Newham (Patchougue, N.Y.) had an RBI single and junior Matt Bishop (Woburn, Mass.) had an RBI triple. Bishop would score on a passed ball. However, Wentworth took advantage of four Gull errors in the home half of the third inning, scoring four times, including a two-run single from senior Garrett Fisher (Sterling, Mass.), and led 4-3 after three innings of play.
Endicott would score six times over the next three innings, while holding the hosts to none to take a 9-4 lead. Senior Pat Vincent (Manchester, N.H.) knocked in three of the six runs, including a two-run double in the fourth. The Gulls struck for a pair of runs in the top of the seventh on a two-run double by sophomore Erik Fields (Swampscott, Mass.) to lead 11-4. Wentworth got two runs back in the home half of the final inning on a two-run double by sophomore outfielder Jhoel Oviedo (Roslindale, Mass.).
Senior Greg Allain (Berlin, N.H.) pitched six strong innings for the Gulls, allowing just three hits and one walk, while striking out nine batters. He helped his own cause at the plate with a 4-for-4 game. Fields (3-for-5, two RBI) and Vincent (2-for-2, three RBI) also had multiple hits.
Wentworth freshman A.J. Alioto (Miami, Fla.) pitched 4.2 innings, allowing six runs on 10 hits and striking out three batters. Offensively, six players had one hit each, with Fisher and Oviedo having two RBI apiece.
In the second game, Wentworth got out of a bases loaded jam in the top of the first inning and scored a pair of runs on a Fisher single to take an early 2-0 lead. Leading off the second inning, the Gulls cut the lead in half when freshman Dan Gomez (East Longmeadow, Mass.) hit a home run to left field. Endicott would add three more in the third inning, aided by a pair of Wentworth errors, and took a 4-2 lead.
A single run scored by sophomore Newham in the fourth upped the lead to 5-2 before Endicott scored two runs in both the fifth and sixth innings to take a commanding 9-2 lead. The Leopards managed a pair of runs in the home half of the seventh on a two-run double by senior Jim Potter (Westport, Mass.) to round out the scoring.
Senior Jamie Turner (Woburn, Mass.) pitched five innings, allowing two runs on six hits and struck out five batters to earn his second win of the season. Offensively, Newham and Gomez were each 2-for-4 with two RBI, while Allain was 2-for-3.
Making his first start of the season, junior Conrad Leger (Quincy, Mass.) lasted five-plus innings, allowing nine runs (six earned) on 12 hits. Oviedo (2-for-4), Fisher (two RBI), and sophomore Brent Grenier (Oxford, Maine; 2-for-4) led Wentworth.
Endicott improves to 13-5 while Wentworth drops to 4-12. The Gulls wrap up a long week tomorrow as they play games seven and eight against Roger Williams. Start time is 11:00 am in Bristol, RI.
