(Beverly, MA) After a loud first inning in which six runs were scored and saw Endicott holding a 4-2 lead, it looked like a high scoring game was in store. However, both pitchers, Endicott's Jon Trowt and Babson's Tom Fitzgerald, settled down and the game got to the eighth inning with Endicott clinging to a 5-4 lead.
Babson tied it up in the top of the ninth when Jay Verrill singled. On his attempted steal, the ball got away from Endicott shortstop, Adam Labbe and Verill went all the way to third. Steve Tamoush smashed a one-hopper at Labbe who was drawn in. He knocked it down and made the play, keeping Verrill at third. Pinch hitter Ryan Campbell then hit a shallow fly to left that Endicott's Tom Warner could not handle and Verill scored to tie the game.
In the bottom of the ninth, Pat Vincent led off with a sharp single to left off Babson reliever, Brett Best. Jason Newham laid down a well-executed sacrifice bunt that resulted in a hit as he beat the throw to first. Steve Vidmosko followed with another bunt that drew a high throw from Babson's catcher, Ted D'ziuba, and allowed Pat Vincent to score the game-winning run from second.
Babson opened the game with two runs on two hits by John Hudspeth and Robbie Leer. Endicott answered with four runs on four hits in the bottom of the first. Jason Newham tripled and Steve Vidmosko, Labbe, and Gavin Softic all singled.
Babson tied the game at 4-4 with runs in the fourth and sixth. Endicott went on top 5-4 in the eighth on hits from Matt Bishop and Softic.
Jon Trowt, who has been stellar in relief this year, gets credit for a complete game victory; his first of the season. Reliever Brett Best gets the loss and falls to 1-2. Billy Lucas, John Hudspeth and Jay Verrill each had two hits apiece for Babson; who had seven for the game. Endicott's Newham, Vidmosko, Vincent and Labbe each had two hits for the Gulls; who totaled 11 as a team.
Babson drops to 7-9 while Endicott improves to 11-5. In an interesting twist, Endicott travels to Babson tomorrow to play CCC rival Wentworth because Wentworth does not have a field on its downtown Boston campus. The double-header starts at 12:00.
