Women’s Tennis Downs Gordon, 7-2

WENHAM, Mass. – The Endicott women's tennis team extended its Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) regular season unbeaten streak to 20 straight matches on Thursday evening with a 7-2 win over crosstown rival Gordon College.

Endicott took control of the match by fashioning a 2-1 lead in doubles play before claiming victories in five out of six singles matches to move to 2-1 overall on the season, and 2-0 in conference action. The Gulls received wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles, and victories at No. 2-6 singles.

  • The Connecticut duo of sophomores Reilly Fitzgibbons (Killingworth, Conn.) and Lauren Rahr (Waterford, Conn.) got Endicott going after being down 1-0 in doubles with an 8-2 victory in the No. 3 slot to even things up at 1-1.
  • Junior Maxine Bergstein (Hingham, Mass.) and senior Mackenzie Rhodes (Rye, N.H.) responded moments later with an 8-4 triumph at the No. 2 position to make it 2-1.
  • Rhodes is now two doubles wins (36) shy of tying Yuko Matsumoto for eighth on the all-time doubles win list.
  • In singles, sophomore Gillian Freter (Scituate, Mass.), Rahr, and senior Jamie Zompa (Marlbrough, Mass.) rattled off three straight victories to clinch the match for the Gulls. Freter won in consecutive sets at No. 5, while Rahr posted a 6-1, 6-1 triumph at No. 4, and Zompa produced a 6-1, 6-4 victory at No. 6.
  • Sophomore Margot Andreasen (Portland, Maine) also turned in a 6-2, 6-1 triumph at No. 3 and Fitzgibbons rounded out the list of winners for the Gulls with a tough 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) victory in the No. 2 position.

FOR THE FOES

  • Reigning CCC Player of the Week Abbie Denney (Peoria, Ariz.) led the Fighting Scots to both of their wins on the night, which included an 8-3 score at No. 1 doubles with teammate Justine Hanson (Meadow Vista, Calif.) and a 2-6, 6-4, 10-8 victory at No. 1 singles.

WHAT'S NEXT

Endicott (2-1, 2-0 CCC) hosts Colby College this Saturday at 11 a.m. in the first-ever meeting between the two programs. Gordon (1-2, 1-1 CCC) travels to Curry for a conference matchup this Saturday at 12 p.m.
