Gulls Post 2-1 Victory Over Western New England To Close Out CCC Slate

BEVERLY, Mass. — Sophomore forward Sophia Cogliano (Saugus, Mass.) tapped in the game-winning goal as the Endicott field hockey team secured a narrow 2-1 home victory over the visiting Western New England University Golden Bears in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action Wednesday evening at North Field to close out the conference slate in the regular season.

Junior midfielder Madi Wood (Bristol, Vt.) notched her second goal of the season on a feed from Cogliano for the Gulls' first goal of the game just 1:09 into the contest.

Junior forward Allison Jackson (Mahopac, N.Y.) registered her first goal of the season from junior forward Brittany DeLima (Branchville, N.J.) to knot the score at 1-1 in the 11th minute.

Cogliano's game-winner came by way of collecting junior defender Emylee Wood's (Kensington, Vt.) shot off the post and depositing it into the back of the cage in the 41st minute.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • Today's game saw the Gulls win their 12th straight meeting between the two teams, as the Gulls lead the all-time series, 16-5, dating back to the 2003 season.
  • The Gulls swept the regular-season series, as Endicott came from behind to win 3-2 at Western New England on 09/28/16.
  • Senior goalkeeper Cheka Ventura (Lawrence, Mass.) made six saves as she improved to 10-8 overall and 9-3 in conference play.
  • This was Cogliano's eighth career game-winning goal (fourth this season), as she currently leads the team with 28 points this season while picking up her eighth assist on the year.
  • Cogliano registered her third game this season scoring at least one goal and recording at least one assist in the same game.
  • Cogliano and M. Wood were the Gulls' two goal scorers in the previous meeting at Western New England this season.
  • E. Wood and junior midfielder Samantha Crowley (Leicester, Mass.) each earned their first and third defensive saves of the season, respectively.
  • E. Wood moved into a tie for fifth on the program's all-time list with seven career defensive saves.

FOR THE FOES

  • Junior goalkeeper Grace Trupe (Cardiff, Calif.) fell to 8-8 on the season as she stopped five shots.
  • DeLima registered her CCC-leading 16th assist of the season.

NOTES

  • Golden Bears' first-year assistant coach Anna Giannoni graduated from Endicott in 2012 and earned her MBA from the Van Loan School in 2014. Giannoni was a three-year member of the Gulls' program from 2008-2010, twice earning All-CCC First Team honors, in addition being named the 2008 TCCC Rookie of the Year.
  • Gulls' junior forward Brittany Bushey (Pittsford, Vt.) received Longstreth/NFHCA Division III Weekly Award Honorable Mention this week (10/26/16).

WHAT'S NEXT

Endicott (10-8, 9-3 CCC) will honor Cheka Ventura (Lawrence, Mass.) and Emily Paladino (North Reading, Mass.) on Saturday, October 29 on Senior Day at North Field at 1:00 p.m. as the Gulls host Salem St. in non-conference action in the final game of the regular season.

Western New England (8-9, 7-4 CCC) welcomes Salve Regina to its campus on Saturday, October 29 at 6:00 p.m. in the final game of the regular season.
