Gulls Thwarted By MIT's Late Comeback, 4-3

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Endicott field hockey team saw a 3-0 lead slip away as host MIT engineered a second-half comeback Tuesday night at Jack Barry Field.

The Gulls rattled off three straight goals to go up 3-0 just 26 minutes into the action, highlighted by a pair of assists from junior midfielder Samantha Crowley (Leicester, Mass.).

Endicott took a 3-1 lead into halftime before junior forward Emily Penn's (Columbia, Md.) consecutive hat trick tied the score at 3-3 in the 45th minute.

Freshman midfielder Devon Goetz (Rockville, Md.) scored her first career goal to put the Engineers on top in the 52nd minute, capping off a string of four unanswered goals to close out the contest.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • The Gulls took a season-high 19 shots, but dropped their second straight game.
  • Crowley recorded two assists in a single game for the first time in her career.
  • Junior midfielder Emily Hirtle (Rowley, Mass.) notched her first goal of the season in the 7th minute to open the game's scoring.
  • Junior defender Emylee Wood (Kensington, N.H) registered her first goal on the season in the 9th minute.
  • Freshman forward Nicki Thurston (Fryeburg, Maine) scored her second career goal in the 25th minute to give Endicott a 3-0 lead at the time.
  • Sophomore midfielder Meghan Stanton (Newburyport, Mass.) picked up her second assist of the season in back-to-back games for the Gulls.
  • Senior goalkeeper Cheka Ventura (Lawrence, Mass.) stopped 10 shots as she fell to 1-2 on the year.

FOR THE FOES

  • Sophomore goalkeeper Cailey Talbot (Southampton, N.J.) made career-high 13 saves as she improved to 4-1 on the season.
  • Penn leads the team with nine goals through five games and recorded her third multi-goal game of the season (second hat trick).
  • Junior defender Anna Neuman (Abingdon, Md.) and freshman midfielder Rayna Higuchi (Solana Beach, Calif.) each earned their first assist of the year.
  • MIT is 3-1 at home this season, as the Engineers outscored opponents 13-8 through five games.

NOTES

  • MIT leads the all-time series, 7-1, dating back to the 2008 season.
  • MIT won last season's meeting, 1-0, at North Field on 09/24/15 as senior forward Siobhan Rigby (Richmond, Va) scored the lone goal.

Endicott (1-2, 0-0 CCC) begins conference play with the home opener on Thursday, September 15 at 7:00 p.m. against Nichols.

MIT (4-1, 0-0 NEWMAC) travels to Lasell College on Thursday, September 15 in non-conference action at 4:00 p.m.
